I feel the need to quiet the cummins. We are expecting our first child in a few weeks and I have been thinking about my little girl having to listen to that drone. I have the turbo back 5" mbrp system on now. I have been wondering if adding a muffler like the donaldson to the system would help. I would just leave the mbrp muffler and add another. Do yall think it would help, or would I be throwing money out the window.

honestly i HAD a 5" system on my 01 and i tried muffler after muffler. So i gave up and stepped it down to a 4" system and its a LOT better but still there but its nothing at all like the 5". I will be adding twin turbos soon and have been told that makes it pretty quiet. i moved my muffler from the back of the truck to the end of the down pipe and it made the cab noise a little bit less. i might add 1 more flow through muffler. Just remember if you are using the after market exhaust for flow and EGT reduction make sure to keep a flow through muffler on and not a conventional style. if you use a conventional style you will be close to factory flow and EGT reading. more flow = lower EGT.

Hope this helps...

Was just talking to a guy that owns a disel shop here in portland because I was concerned about drone on a 4" turbo back system I was thinking about buying and he informed me he has tried a dozen different configurations on his Dodge and swears that two mufflers installed is the answer to the drone and does not affect performance. NOT a muffler and a resonator. TWO mufflers.

If you look up FTE resonator on YouTube, you will find a video with that resonator on a cummins powered Dodge. You will get to hear before/after test drives with and without the resonator, and with windows up and down. Actually a very helpful video.

could you find out the type of muffler and placement of them?

I just installed my MBRP 4" exhaust a couple days ago. I drive back and forth to Portland Maine (35 miles one way) every day and haven't heard any drone. I didn't get it from my old BD 4" either. I do, however, have a Bed Rug, and that quiets things a bit, but the last time I heard a drone, was with my 3 inch straight pipe. Maybe the 5" is just prone to harmonic resonance.

Good luck, and let us know how you fix it. My MBRP by the way, went in flawlessly. Nice system.

I'm running a 4" MBRP S6108304, 304 stainless system with a MBRP M1031 muffler right on the cat, nice and queit.

Thanks for all of the replies. I am most likely going to try the 5" resonator. It sounds like a good product, and for less than $100 it's worth a try.

Well I finally installed the 5" resonator and it definitely takes away the drone. I was skeptical when I first saw it, but it does work. It will quiet the entire exhaust, so be careful it you really like it loud outside. Overall I am very pleased with it.

Mbrp

I had the same problem with MBRP 4" on my 04. I installed a short MBRP muffler before the one that came with the kit. MUCH BETTER NOW.

From what I read on other threads and can see on their website, it's nothing more than a corkscrew with a pipe straight through the center. I want to get one as well, mine drones bad when pulling the fifth wheel at highway speeds.

This is the only way I have found to eliminate the drone on 03/04, Magnaflow Race Muffler with BANKS Monster. The picture was taken after 2inch snowfall and the State match the snowfall with salt and chloride.
