Sloppy Steering-Suggestions??

I think the noisiest part of our trucks is the motor, not really the exhaust. Once you're moving, as long as you don't hammer it, it's not that bad.

I have the Diesel Dynamics 4" system on my truck and it has a very healthy exhaust note... in fact, I think it tends to drone a bit at freeway speeds, particularly when I'm loaded. I mentioned this to the DD guys when I was in Vegas recently, and they suggested adding a second muffler.

So I'm thinking if I did this, it'd also quiet down the overall exhaust note. I like the sound of it, but I can't really hear it since the motor is so loud. And if it makes the neighbors a little happier, so be it.

I agree that starting the truck early in the morning does make a lot of noise. I wonder about the neighbors next to my driveway when I do fire it up early in the mornings when I'm going someplace. Even though I don't particuarly like those neighbors, I still think about it.

The way I look at it is: "Its' Legal". Beyond that, I don't complain when the neighbor's kid's run screaming up and down the alley, the parents come home drunk, laughing, etc. , barking dogs and of course the resident Harley. "Loud pipes save lives"

Install a 120 db backup warning beeper, when they complain about the noise of your truck remove the beeper. They will be happy and most likely won't complain twice. Quieting down your engine can be expensive, as others have said most of the noise comes from under the hood, not out the tailpipe.

I love it . I better put that on right away, so as I don't back over any stray children .

That wonderful Diesel Clatter

At least you have a 12 valve. The 24 v's are alot more noisy. I leave at 4am. I use my block heater. The only guy that b1$%#es is a low life drunk that lives across the street. I say Screw him. He doesn't work and sponges off of his mother. He can sleep when I leave.

Noise?

What about those of us who are basically straight piped like me and turn on the exhaust brake in the cold mornings to warm it up?!Now talk about some noise:eek: Mine had a hissing noise at the tailpipe before the muffler fell off,now it,s really loud! The thought had crossed my mind to put the muffler back on but when I'm cruising down the road and open it up it sounds shweet:cool:

I start up at 0500 too

Well guys:

I live in a 5th wheel in an RV park and crank mine up at 0500 every morning. I plug 'er in when temp start dropping below 50 so I can reduce warm up time. Still no complaints, however, could be due to fact one neighbor has Frieghtliner RV toter and onther has a noisey Cummins too. There are some Ferds in the parkbut they only sound like a car running a little low on oil. :D :D :D

BTW, the engine is the noisiest part. I like it! :p

You guys crack me up

"Reverse alarms", a "Ford sounds like a car running low on oil", "Drunk sponging neighbors", "backing over yelling kids". .

You guys just crack me up:)

You could tow it off and start it.

I let mine idle at 5 AM just to pay them back for the dirt bikes that go by in the evening. :p :p

noisey Ram

josparkz:

just noticed in issue 27, pg 111 a product that you might look in to, ADVANCED THERMAL PRODUCTS if you don't have that issue, the site is www.ronmoss@ atpwrap.com or -- email address removed --. these covers are little pricey but but cheaper than getting rid of your ride. just thought you might give these guys a call. check it out . my pennys worth.

I say:

I bet they would think that was too noisy , (especially if they were paying for it }

I ordered me one of those ATP oil pan covers . I'm looking for a 4" Super-Trapp type setup to put on the tailpipe. That should take a decibel or two out. Apparently ATP makes everything up on a as ordered basis , so I'll have to wait a week or so for it.

Maybe it will snow soon. That should absorb some reflected sound:D :D

2w lo kit?

Would pulling out of the parking lot in lo range help reduce the noise some? You know, keep the revs down. Bob Verhoef ( -- email address removed -- )has a kit. About $80. Just a thought.

I don't start my truck at 5:00 AM. I back it into the driveway at 1:00 AM. The only remark I have gotten from the neighbor is about the air horn being beeped by the remote door locks!

HAHAHA.....

I love the noise my damn truck makes.

The neighbors all wondered why I bought such a big, noisy truck till I showed up with the 25' T/T.

I also love telling them I dont get 4 mpg when I'm towing, I get alot more than that.

This truck has also helped me lose weight.

The burger flipper cant hear a damn thing in the drive thru's I happen to fit through, so I have to actually get down and order my food.

All this extra exercise has caused me to tighten the ol belt a couple notches... yuck yuck.

Forget it! Even if you had NO exhaust noise, your Cummins would wake people up. That's just part of being a Cummins! That's why my brother bought a Duramax... ...

It's always something, huh?:rolleyes: At the apartments where my wife and I used to live, we were on the 2nd floor, and I would park nose-first into the bedroom window of the 1st floor unit (not by choice, but it was usually the only thing available when I got home from work) and he would gripe and complain in the afternoons while I was walking the dog that my "bunch of marbles in a coffee can" in the mornings was NOT the way he wanted to wake up.

So, I offered to call him first before I left !!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

His complaint was obviously the motor... ... but THAT'S why I bought it... ... . I don't care HOW good a Pooper-Scoop runs..... I wouldn't buy it just because of the way they sound.

But it's just my $. 02

I've got a 5" straight pipe and I've finally decided to get a dynomax to see if it'll quiet it down a little. If I take it easy, the neighbors don't complain much, but if I go WOT I can be heard for about a mile and a half. I've even gotten pulled over by the local PD for my previous 3" straight pipe. Since I've gone 5" they don't complain too much.

noise cummins

J. D. - it's not your exahust thats making the noise. not with a 5" pipe, the engine has so much clater that the only you'll make quiter is to cover it with a ATP blanket, top and bottom. get a creper and scoot under your truck while its running, set your brake, block the wheel, and listen, do a walk around, your ears will tell you where its coming from. or-park it in the north forty and get a bike and ride it to your truck. (just kidding) my pennys worth.

MLee is right; when the common rail injection is adopted, Cummins will be quieter, but for now, learn to live with it or get a Duramax.
