The results

I put a kitten (which is a small cat) in my exhaust system. I put my cardboard in front of the intercooler (low rent winter front).

I had ATP build me a oil pan cover (I would have loved to have had them install it, too :D ).

I had a little chat with the neighbor today and she is much happier with the sound of my truck now.

Three cheers for technology :D :D :D

Exhaust noise

I have a pretty noisy 99. I have a Dieasel Dynamics 4 inch exhaust and at May madness I listened to their truck with a second, short muffler and I was really impressed. I had them add a second muffler and my exhaust is really quiet. The noise form the injection pump is pretty loud but if you keep the piece of plastic from the air filter to the fender in place, it really helps. Also if you use a K&N it makes more noise, at least with mine but I only have 383 hp and 835 torque on the ground. :p

noise

i certainly agree with the idea of consideration for others. however, i'm also convinced some people will complain no matter what you do. my wife and i both ride harleys so i suspect the CTD is much quieter than our bikes. i basically start the vehicles and go. maintaining a light foot and throttle until down the road. the people down the end of the block probably like me less than the nextdoor neighbors. loud pipes save lives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Loud pipes save lives EH???

Ya know I seem to heard that same comment from my very distastefull neighbor of mine whose garage faces my bedroom,,Well with me being a daylight sleeper due to driving at nite was not much I could do,,His comment to me was about my LOUD and OBNOXIOUS farm tractor sounding junk that make more noise coming in and out of the neighbor hood that ANY of his drag piped hogs,,After a particularly harsh meeting between us that had us mediated by Officer Jabloney,,I explained that my Cummins warming for a few minutes at night(7-9 pm) was not the same as his hogs at full song while tuning during the day,,Seemed education was in order now,one call and my buddies sons 557 inch Hemi Duster was at my house and we had a lesson in loud pipes at 7:01 am on a Sunday morning while loading it to go to dragstrip,,No more problem,Seems Officer Jabloney has made the peace after one to many trips as he said,,Fact is this, round here and I'm certain in your area too if you research it there is a time that can be considered "disturbing the peace"at a certain decibel level,my area is 9pm till 7 am,,Most times common courtesy handles it but sometimes not,as long as neighbors are cool with it your in if not it may get a little bumpy,,As for the loud pipes saves lives, maybe in some areas in this case at my house NOT... .

I'd suggest 2 things. First, if you're straight piped, put on a straight thru 2' muffler. Maybe Dynomax has one. Second, put on a 'turn down' on the end of the tail pipe. You'll be surprised how much it quiets things down @ ear level. :D I've done this on a # of different 4 bangers & V8's & of course the Money Sink & it always works. :) :)

Maybe. Whilst riding my DR650 at about 40MPH, a couple bikes with loud pipes passed me. I didn't hear them until they were right next to me. I was *very* startled.

Most localities and states have limits on sound pressure coming from exhaust systems, and most, if not all, loud pipes greatly exceed these limits.

To each his own. I don't think loud exhaust helps as much as aficianados think. And they may well do more harm than good.

Loud pipes

I own and ride two Harleys,

My 98 full dresser with a 80watt low beam-100 high beam headlight + two 55 watt spotlights and stock pipes.

My 76 with same headlight, no spotlights and a Thunderheader 2 into 1 performance header.

Guess which one I have more people cut me off while riding beacuse "I didn't see you"

Loud pipes make more noise, but WILL get that car driver's attention, even the idiot on the cell phone. ;)

That said; I still am respective of my neighbors and don't go WFO until I'm out on the highway.

What are your impressions of the oil pan cover from ATP??

While Elk hunting this year, I sometimes wondered as I slowly clattered up the mtn in the pre-dawn darkness how many elk were moving to the quieter side of the hunting area or a different county. I am really interested in this product.

Oil pan and valve cover noise

Jandtjil, I have made my own sound-reduction covers for my valve cover and oil pan.

I used a dense 1" thick black foam. It can be compressed to about 1/2" with a firm pinch of thumb and finger. Kind of like a thick carpet padding.

The valve cover is a foam 'hat' that is held in place with bungie cords.

The oilpan is several pieces strapped in place with bungie cords. It won't win any awards for appearance, but the noise reduction is quite noticable.

The best way I can describe how noticable the noise reduction is is this: I live on a narrow tree lined country road, and in the summer I like to drive with the windows down enjoying the fresh air and weather.

Without the noise blankets, the noise was so bad echoing off the road and trees, that the radio could not be heard, and it was just plain obnoxious.

With the noise blankets in place, I can hear the radio, and enjoy my drive to and from home to the pavement.

The truck still sounds like a Cummins, just muted some.

If you want some photos, email me and I'll send some.

Hope this helps, Greg L

It is definetly your well made , industrial rated , military spec. , bullet proof (?) and fireproof type oil pan cover. Seems like it weighed 20 or 30 lbs .

I liked the little name plate they put on there that had my name on it :D . It is supposed to be good up to 1800 degrees, so as far as the products that go on the hotter locations , meltdown  should not be a problem. I thought it was a pain in the butt  to install though. I ended up having to jack the engine up to get it by the cross brace in the front. It fit really well around the pan once it was in place . Finding stuff to tie it on to besides the transmission lines was tough in a few spots. I hope it doesn't start getting crap in it through the front edge, cause I sure don't want to take it off and clean it. Customer support was pretty good.

I thought about trying to make something out of fiberglass insulation , just to see how it worked. Since I have very little time or desire  to crawl under my truck these days, I figured I would just go with the product that was supposed to do the job. It does  .

SURE AM GLAD!

I sure do feel for you guys having to live where people have nothing better to do than worry about how loud your truck is! I have straight exhaust and I am about to install 4" Jardine without the muffler! I just hope it is as loud as my 12 valver was with straight 4 inch! I love Texas! I have neighbors and I try to be considerate. But, they know that I am a gearhead and at any given time I could abuse them with with a he!! of alot more noise! IMO you need to make more noise doing other things and your truck will be the least of their worries! I recommend getting in to race cars! I love the sound of open headers in the morning!:D

I almost ran over a neighborhood kid the other day, if I would have had a gasser the kid would have been flat. He was riding a gas powered scooter. I know he heard the rattlin RAM and went to the other side of the road...
