Ok now that the Bombing Bug has bitten me to the Max... Here's the deal, I have installed gauges, BHAF, 16cm housing... the 16 housing seemed good on the lower end but I wanted to free up the backpressure by opening up the exhuast... So I got impatient and had the hairbrained idea of taking it to a muffler shop to have them cut the stock exhaust pre muffler and put a 45 deg bend out to a huge tailpipe in front of the rear pass. tire. It looks great but... THIS THING IS LOUD!!! But the turbo sounds cool. I was driving around with the passenger side window down through town and it's not bad when cruising around, but give it some go and RUMBLE RUMBLE - window breaking style! I don't want to get a noise ticket, but I'm considering putting a magnaflow muffler on it just infront of the new pipe. The dilemma is... do I try to patch this or should I just buy a whole new system?? (this is the stock 3") I'm sure I can get by with the straight pipe for a little while but I can have the muffler installed tomorrow morning. I know straight piping is cool, but maybe not cool with stock pipe, sounds a little to raspy to me. I'm willing to guess what the consensus will be but I'm open for all ideas. The other thing is I still have the stock setup and it can be restored just as easy. I can't tell the difference in power, but maybe because I'm too distracted by the BEAST I have released. EGT's are lower for sure.

Nick, around here everyone is either straight piped or has stacks. Don't know what California is like. I think it would be less noisy to you, if you removed the muffler, added a section of straight pipe, then stuck with the factory exhaust dumping out behind the right rear tire. Noise ticket? Maybe some other Cally owners can help with this. If it was mine, since you have a two wheel drive, I'd find a shop or do it myself, I'd have a full 5" system back. Have your 3" downpipe or build a 4"dp, to the 5" all the way back. Should be enough room to do this on a 2wd. Of course the noise nazi's might not like it.....

So anyway I took the rig for a spin on the freeway and LOVED it... I found that If I kept my foot out of it around town (L. A. inner city sprawl) it's no louder than a turbo-supercharged fire engine! So anyway also noticed when I was getting on the freeway that I have gotten 4-5 more psi boost up over 20 now... with no pump tweaking. I would sure like to go 5" like you were saying but until I get my hands on such things, I think I'll stick with the setup I have. Unfortunately I lost my digital camera :( otherwise I'd update my readers rigs. BTW Bill I noticed that there are a lot of dieselers out near you... I am hopefully moving to OHIO this summer with my G/F as she is going to school out there. SEE YOU IN MUNCHIE!! I know I'll fit in much better over there. BTW they will give you a ticket for anything/everything. The good thing is that diesels are rare out here so the coppers have their eyes (and ears) peeled for rice rockets and blow-off valves rather than a straight piped six cylinder farm truck...

If you want to quiet it down a little, Summit Racing has a 3" glasspack that gives a really nice sound. I ran one on mine for a while and liked the tone.

I have since gone with a 4" system with a large muffler and it's too quiet. :(

when i made the switch to 4" straight (from 3" straight), it made the noise issue much better. much deeper, less raspy. then the PODs, and i could actually hear my engine with my windows rolled up! so, needless to say, i would highly recommend going full 4". have fun!

oh yeah, anything will be better than the 3". when i switched to 4", spool up was VERY noticeably quicker, and egt's went way down. and i got a few more psi.

Not all of us. I have a 4 inch system with a muffler. I saw the boost gains, and spoolup gains, but have little noise... like Dan said. . almost too quiet.

But where I live they will hassle you big time for noisy exhaust, plus we have emission testing so I'll stick with a muffler.

I would run without a muffler, but I leave before 5 a. m. , and I don't want to wake the neighbors. :(

I'm running the BD exhaust, and it made a huge difference on the highway from the banged up stock pipe.

My wife used to say no to the stacks, but since her daughter totalled my car, I've a little bit of leverage. Where can I get the mudflaps with the ladies on them? :)

To heck with bothering the neighbors. If they do dumb stuff like mine (throwing rocks into the truck and house from the mower deck) I don't give two hoots in the Southland. I will even run the R's up on the engine when I warm it a tad prior to driving away..... @ 5:35 am

Too bad I ain't got a PTO dyno for the farm tractor. I'd open that thing up (with it's straight pipe) too!

Sorry I vented... ..... no I'm not.

I'm with Scott, I get home from work at 12:30 at night/morning and mine is straight piped. I'm usually nice and keep the rpm easy, unless I go past the guys house who yelled at me for running the stop sign (the same one my wife saw him run #@$%! ). Then I make a complete stop and take off in 1st and row the gears! Oo. :D I hate hippocrates.

Travis. .

I did a 4" from the X-Member back abd put in a Magna-Flow. I am pretty happy with the sound. Now I just gotta fork over 200 bones to have a custom 4" downpipe done.

Have Fun.

driving away..... @ 5:35 am

Hey... that's the same time I leave for work. Probably why I don't hear your truck revvin up.

My across the street neighbor gets home from work at 3 am..... I know I wake him up at 5:35. :-laf

Summit racing Glasspack Installed

Got the 24" glasspack and it sounds great... don't know if the 18" would've been better but all the raspyness is long gone and the rumble is still rumblin'!

My downpipe broke...

Well It's my fault and theirs but I noticed a preload on the downpipe when I was installing my new turbo, and well I didn't think it was a big deal, well 1500 miles later,,, sheared and cracked right at the first weld/bend. I think I may just do 4 inch now and be done with it. Or stacks or anybody got an old 3" downpipe? I don't have any idea. Mine is non i/c and rips site looks slim for options. Oh well, now I guess I have an excuse to start commuting 40 miles r/t to school every day by bicycle for a while, great that there are no cummins around here to soot me off hte road, just ricers :-laf . I'm spending too much time and money bombing this rig!!!! But oh isn't it great... Fuel Screw turned in 1 turn, smoke in two turns, afc pin turned to max, starwheel all the way down, 16cm housing, BHAF, high idle in two turns etc. etc. etc. Well at least the engine/head gasket hasn't given out... YET

there are 2 pics in my gallery that you should look at before going much farther. if you've got fabrication skills, you can very easily make you own 4" system. if you want details, let me know.

just traded a buddy for it. he got my whole set-up. i'm making a whole new one to go with twins. unfortunately it's off a F***. did those pics clear up the downpipe situation for you?
