Ive just installed a four inch jardine system turbo back ,and although I love the performance upgrade ,Icant stand the roar inside the cab when I really put my foot into it! Would wrapping the muffler with sound deadening material help? or am I going to have to put a quieter muffler on! I need some help here? 98. 5 ISB White Quad Cab 4/4 long bed 275 bosch injectors k&n and 4inch turbo back system. Earl.

I also have the dreaded drone,It gets old real quick. I said i was going to add a second muffler a yr ago, still havent. It is very annoying.

Earl,

I am not sure if you are going to find very many mufflers that are quieter...

I have the same exhaust on my truck and I love the sound of it. I do not think that is it that loud. Then again I only had the stock exhaust for 4 days before it was removed.

I spoke with Rip's Exaust in Oregon the other day and he said put two mufflers on, it will not affect the flow and quiet it up.

Anyone using 2 muffs? Or mabey using some of that sound deadining material would help. I would be interested to see what the quietest combo for 4" is also. Paul

Bill,if its anything like mine its not the noise thats the problem its the drone/vibration the exhaust resonates the entire truck in the 2100-2500RPM range. Its very annoying

Although I have no experience with it, I would consider some of that sound deadning material on the exterior of the bottom of the cab and maybe behind the back seat , Maybe even on the firewall where the downpipe exists.

Move the muffler........

I had the dreaded drone with my Jardine setup also. I tried the 4" resonator but thought the truck was too quiet. I have since switched mufflers but mounted it forward. Cured the drone problem, On the 02 we mounted it forward right off the bat and have never had a drone.

I also used stainless strap clamps now so I can get the systems apart if I wanted to. If you think you can get yours apart without too much damage mount the muffler after the first straight section of pipe. Put the second section behind the muffler. Mines been this way for a year and a half with no sag problems and no drone.

I love it!

Fellas:

I love the sound of my BD 4" exhaust with the Cummins. :D I think the drone is the result of physics (I'm no scientist). I've installed high performance mufflers on everything I've owned in the last 25 years and they all make (made) a drone sound at the resonant frequency of the engine, exhaust, frame and body. They all are loud when getting down on them, under heavy load and at the resonant frequency (pretty close to sweet spot on motor).

There are a couple of preventions/cures: leave the stock system on (there still will be some slight drone) or turn the radio up (what I do). LoL.

I'm used to the noise, but I'll be running down the highway, come up to a red light and realize how loud the radio is. I turn down the radio, then get going again, can't hear the radio and have to turn it up again. Oo.

I transfered all companents (including exhaust system) from my 00 2500 ETC/DEE to my 02 3500 ETH/DEE. My 3500 has more insulation material on floorboard and my truck is undercoated, but it is way louder than my 2500 was. I even hear the turbo much louder on this truck.

Earplugs may be the cheapest fix:p .

Have fun! Wiredawg

I like it loud too,but this drone is obnoxious. My 3 yr old get a headache if i have to drive on the freeway between 68-81 mph. I either go slow in the slow lane and get blown away or drop to drive at 70 and and let it rev,or go over 81 mph.

Has anyone tried wrapping the entire system with a heat blanket or other heat resistant material? I have heard a couple of theories that the hotter gas from the insulation flows faster??? Would the 14ga or thicker construction be preferred for noise dampening?

I have been seriously pondering the modified exhaust, but I know the 'ol lady will not have it if the in cab "drone" starts up. I get enough grief over my straight 4" pipes on the motorcycle (no it does not sound like a rice burner 4 cyl fart machine, more like a ****** off Porsche or Indy car at 4k rpms:D)

Has anybody with an aftermarket system that drones tried installing a resonator right about where the factory system has one? Right under the cab, maybe a few inches forward of where the factory resonator is installed. That's where I'd start.

While researching exhaust systems over a year ago by sound at the LSTDR gathering in Kerrville, I heard one truck drive by, chased him down and asked what aftermarket system he had. Turns out it was the STOCK system with the muffler removed but the stock resonator left in place. So that is what I did. . had a local muffler shop cut out the huge factory muffler and weld in a section of straight pipe. Good for us folks that are mildly bombed, under 350 HP I believe was the number.

Sounds great, no annoying resonance! INEXPENSIVE too! :D

Garrett. I tried to move the muffler forward, but on a quad cab shortwheelbase there just isnt enough room to put the muffler forward one section, the crossmemeber is in the way. The best i could would be to hack it up ,and move it up about 2 feet. This would require cutting and expanding the 4",no one here ha the dies to do the 4" pipe,We have a pipe machine at the shop, but nothing bigger than 3" dies.

If you get the stainless steel straight clamps you won't need to flare the pipe. You just butt the ends together. Most big truck and diesel shops carry those clamps. Here is a site that sells those clamps about halfway down the page.

I have the stainless bandclamps,at every joint. I was not aware that they were Ok to use as a pipe. I though they were to go over both 1/2's of the pipe an wrap them together

For exhaust lurkers.....

This is no help to this thread, but for those of you who are researching a 4" system... ...

My JRE doesn't drone at all, and I've never seen anyone post on the TDR that there's does.

Just out of curiousity, do dual 5" stacks tend to drone more or less than a full 4" aftermarket exhaust (BD in my case)? Perhaps they are just louder overall? As you probably know, I can't even hear the actual exhaust from the drivers seat, just the roar of the Cummins. The BD sounds good in the cab from what I can tell, but the Banks on my regular cab tends to quite obnoxious around 2000-2500 rpms. I've never heard stacks on these trucks, so just wondering.

p. s. thought the 02 was plugged in last night, but turns out the cord was not! Started at -30F this morning after 3 attempts (but didn't like it!).
