having extended crank issues with a 2000 QC after replacement of second lift pump. this truck has been ran dry of fuel several times one time due to faulty fuel sending unit. my question is not necessarily rather the VP-44 has puked rather the issue I am about to describe. engine cranks over erratically almost like it is hydro locking. after letting engine set for a few minutes is when erratic cranking happens. could this issue be a injector leaking due to piece of trash from VP-44 going through it?

Can you ultimately start the engine and does it run fine outside of the cranking problem?

Have you checked for trouble codes?

Is the fuel pressure adequate?

In any case, it sounds like it could possibly be an injection timing problem with the VP44.

Good luck,

You can ultimately start engine. No codes. Fuel psi is 14 at idle. Again if after the engine first starts it will shut down immediately. Then it will crank over normally but still take a long time to start. After starting it runs fine.

Let's see if I have this straight...

If you shut down the engine and restart it right away, it starts and runs fine. But if you let it sit for a few minutes, it doesn't want to start properly at first, but after extended cranking it will finally start and runs fine again. Do I have it about right?

More questions:

Does the exhaust smoke during or immediately after the troubled start? If so, what color is the smoke and how much is there?

Does this problem happen consistently... as in every time the truck has sat for a few minutes or longer? Or have you noticed if the problem happens more at certain engine temps or outside air temps?

Did this problem only start after the VP44 was starved of fuel?

Was anything else recently done to the engine or truck? Any engine parts replaced?

Best regards,

John L.
