Competition Going from PDR HX40 to PDR HX40 twins

What are the options for wastegating? I'd like an external setup with my current B1-2 that I can gate to 40 +/-, as well as use in later twin setup after studs, rings, P&P... I've seen Piers' modified ATS manifold, I've seen adapters between the manifold and turbo. Lots of info through PMs already (thanks to all), but what are the pros/cons of any given setup?

well i can say i just took a 2week lesson in turbos, and by popular vote the external waste gate wins by leaps and bounds. they are easier and more precise to adjust( unless your getting a 14cm piers housing). the choice of champs seems to be a 38 mm billet extreme wastegate. maybe some of my "teachers" could make a post and help clear up as to why or why not to go with a external wg.

yes thats true, i meant i have had a lot of information tossed my way in the past week or so and kinda seemed like i was taking turbo 101. :-laf and that there are some very smart people on this site kinda like teachers if ya know what i mean, just tryin to make people smile :D

I agree, the adjustability is awesome. I'd like to get some pros/cons before I get costs so my head isn't automatically swayed by the money! No one seems to be willing to pass on right now, so maybe I'll PM some of the vendors/gurus and get price info at the same time. Wonder if I'll need a different downpipe with the adapter (or can I just weld in the bypass to my existing setup)? Wonder if the Piers exhaust manifold is setup with the WG on the top or bottom (flipped for twins)?

This time of year is a bit tough for hobbies, at least for me, with all of the friends/family time and giving needs. Merry Christmas and good holiday cheer to all!

I would probably go with a tial 44mm v-band gate. They cost a little more and are overkill for what you need but the v-band connections are a lot less prone to leakage. The billet extreme gate is also a good one as it uses 4 bolts to hold each flange on. The cheaper gates use 2 bolts to hold the flanges on are very prone to leaking especially with the egt's our trucks are capable of. You can take the outlet of the wastegate and plumb it into your existing downpipe.

Thanks, Idaho. What's the preffered mounting method? I don't fabricate, but I have a friend that can, or is there a suitable unit for purchase? (or is this sort of proprietary so you don't know until you select who to buy from?)

Well it depends on a few things. First are you running a ATS manifold because I wouldn't weld one to a stocker if it was me. Second do you see twins in the near future? If so I would flip the manifold and weld the wastegate into it and then build a new downpipe to fit. A new downpipe is cheaper, cleaner, and easier then a new manifold or patching it up when going to twins and having to flip it over to put the wastegate on the other side. The downpipe fabbing should be relatively easy and only entail a spacer to make it longer for the additional height of the manifold swap. Another option is to run the manifold upside down with a spacer like the externally wastegated twin setups. This would save you welding to the manifold but will be more work and the downpipe might be harder to fab. Another benefit would be reusing it for twins later on and being able to use a stock manifold. I dont know of anything for sale at this time to do what your asking for but I'm sure there are some that will fab it up for you. I know Olee Poole has fabbed quite a few spacers for external gates on twins and can probably do the same for you if you chose to go that route but you'll still have to do some fab work to tie into the downpipe unless of course you purchase a new downpipe as well.
