New short throw 5 speed shifter from BMD

"J" Hook

I just wanted to get a feel for anyone using this combo with the stock auto. I'd like to add a little more umph for towing..... 3k lb slide-in pulling three quads. I've been running the EZ for about 6 months and have yet to bring the engine above 2500rpm, no racing, always easy on the go pedal, how long could I get away with the addition of some 275's. My trannie has 55k miles with no slipping... . yet.

"Easy on the go peddle" would be your undoing. The low RPM use you prefer is NOT what you need for a stock trans to live with an EZ and 275's. POUND it and it might live, but with your tendency to ease around on the torque it is a recipe for failure. You sir are a candidate for upgrades before going further with power.

up the line pressures and put a converter stock/UNlock switch in it. a quick slip wont hurt, but constant slipping up a long hill will leave you on the side of the road.

it's gotten me by in a decent manner!:D

98rammer-

What is this switch your reffering to?

If failure is inevitable with the addtion of the 275's will just the addition of a aftermarket valvebody make everyone feel better? I'd like nothing more to have a full blown transmission upgrade but unfortunatly for my truck it has to share the same play money with the quads, snowmachines, dirt bikes. . etc.

Thanks for all the inputs guys.

The switch he is talking about is also referred to as a mystery switch. It sends a signal to the converter making it lock up prematurely. This makes the converter less likely to slip in the lower rpm band. It is a cheap and easy mod, but can be misused and cause trouble. Use it, but use it right.

lmills is correct..... except read it again. ;) i have an UNLOCK switch to keep the converter from slipping. so if i'm doing 50-55mph in OD, it wont lock up. if i do, it will slip pretty easily if i get into the throttle. so for medium/hard acceleration, i do not drive with the converter locked. and i don't believe in running around with 1200rpms locked, even on a stock truck.

of course, once you illiminate one weak link, you go on to the next...

going down the road i'm constantly thinking hp/tourqe curve versus rpms (trans pump pressure output) versus throttle position (line pressure through valve body) versus trans temp.

A good VB will take care of the slipping, and it is your best option.

Lock switches and unlock switches, none of them fix the problem. The problem is the trans is not ready for the power, and cannot handle it.

Fix the problem now or fix the consequences later. It is a LOT cheaper to go for the full upgrades now than it is going to be when your trans is hurting and needs a full rebuild AND upgrades, trust me on this one as I just went down that road.

yeah, you're right. i'm looking to get another truck out of college so as long as the auto doesn't go by then, then good. i have been debating whether to get the Transgo shift kit, or even a fully modded valve body. sure, they'll help, but there's still limitations.

my internal clutches aren't slipping, it's the lockup clutch that is (well, technically it could be OD clutch pack, but i doubt it due to a number of reasons).

honestly, i'm extremely surprised that my transmission has held up to the power that i've put through it (i've owned the truck since 36k miles and worked my way up after 45k on hp). 82k currently on the truck.

a converter and valve body combo would probably hurt worse. you can still only go so high with line pressure (converter apply pressure is much higher though). it's that low down torque that'll rip apart the clutch packs. no matter how much more fuel i add, i cannot get any more torque through the transmission.

plus, if your stock converter starts shuddering (mine doesn't), then it'll shudder its way down the transmission into the clutch packs.

all in all, i'm pretty lucky, but i will be getting a DTT in the future when money permits.

Tom, you are in a really grey area. Higher HP and 80K miles is right in there where confidence starts to fade but hope is not lost. With some detailed pressure tests a good idea of the state of your transmission can be had. There is a chance that it is still upgradeable and that the increased pressures will not hurt anything... ... .....

I beat the ever loving #$% out of mine for EVER. My trans was bone stock and had 130K total on it when it got rebuilt and upgraded. It had 80K miles over 300 RWHP, 40K of those around 350 RWHP. My trans was tired and sore, but not dead by any means. I sure wish I would have coughed up the cash at 50K miles for the upgrades... ... .....

I put my power puck and injectors in around 60K. I don't tow but I wasn't always easy on the throttle. My stock trans started slipping at 105K in Dec 02. I nursed it to 118K and replaced the whole thing in May 03.

Stock auto

Double J im running this setup with the trans stock @ this time so far the only problem ive had is the tran's shuttered on a first to second shift, after i was home i adjusted the bands and the front one needed it bad, since ive pulled the fvr 1000 miles in the mountians and so far its holding the power i have @ this time, no dought one day soon im gona have a trany upgrade, good luck Harv

You can run some serious power through a stock auto and have it survive, but it sure is expensive in the end. Lots cheaper to upgrade it now for most guys... .

Thanks for all the responses guys. I Think I will take the plunge and get the VB/TC and update kit from DTT. I'd rather be safe than sorry (stranded). Of course this means I can also get some DDII and maybe the comp box. Anybody looking for a modified 99' Mountain Max? ;)

Just my experience.........

As you can see from my signature I have a stock auto and running an EZ set on #2. I pull a 40' gooseneck damn near every day. Empty it weighs 8000lbs. Loaded I can have upwards of 25,000lbs total behind my truck. Driven correctly, or should I say "Babied", it seems these stock trannies can be seen to high mileage. Just completed a trip from Ville Platte, LA to Omaha, NE to Minneapolis, MN and back. 17,000lbs behind the truck on the way up, and an 8,000lb empty trailer on the way back. Completed 3300 miles this past week. I hope this helps in some way.

Just my $. 02.

Jay
