Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) EZ & no gages ok?

Does anyone know if its ok to run an EZ on an ETH with no gages? I only tow 4000lbs once in a while. I am ordering some gages but until then don't want to hurt anything either as I am going out with the trailer tomorrow. Should the box come off?

I'd hazard a guess that you will be alright, my ETH ran much cooler egt. wise after I installed the EZ and boost elbow. Get those gauges in a. s. a. p. though, it sucks running blind.

I ran my EZ without gauges for 3 or 4 months and went all over this country. Your clutch may slip though, just pay attention.

One of the basic reasons *I* am seriously considering the EZ-type box, is that many fellas claim it actually REDUCES their EGT's - so while guages are certainly recommended, it's pretty unlikely your addition of the box will increase your engine's parameters in a dangerous way. Use it, enjoy its benefits!

No way does the EZ lower EGT



adding fuel = power which will will increase EGT's



no way will it ever reduce, unless you are talking disabling the wastegate which will increase your boost pressure

Sorry Bob, but it did with my ETH. The reason I stated with the boost elbow is for obvious reasons, it allows you to see more boost, which must account for less egts. I had gauges in my truck before ANY performance mods. I also had a good baseline and took many test trips my favorite 17% grade in town. Before the addition of the EZ, with all else being equal, I could easily hit 1200+ pre-turbo on a hard climb. After the EZ install, the best I could get was 1050 on the same climb, same load, same OEM turbo and airfilter, same exhaust.

Thats why I said, unless you consider the increase in airflow due to the wastgate modifications

Is the drop in EGT's...

due more to the elbow... . or the change in engine timing... . or a combination of the above?

Steve, my guess would be a combo of them both, but due mostly to the elbow and increased boost. To be honest, I'm not sure. My ETH ran hot enough that I didn't even think about running the EZ w/out the aftermarket boost elbow. If someone has an otherwise stock ETH and the EZ, I'd be real interested in a egt comparison with the elbow and w/out.

Correct me if I'm wrong - but isn't the boost mod PART OF the EZ package? If so, and proper operation of the EZ is designed with ALL components installed and functioning properly, what's the problem... ?

I don't belive there's a problem, more-less clairification I suppose.



BTW, I'm sure we all appreciate your opinions on the EZ in your above post, even if you don't have an EZ, and your thoughts are purely speculative.

Thanks Bigsaint. The fact that your ETH ran cooler after the box was all the info I needed. Box stays (elbow too)... ... ... ... . gages will be ordered tomorrow. Was a lot nicer towing up those hills today... . didn't have to downshift.

I too came here to learn - sometimes I seem to be "taught" a bit more than I asked for...

EZ comes with a boost elbow, worm clamp, wire ties, velcro, and instructions.
