At what point can I install a Power Edge? Should I wait until a new truck has a certain amount of miles on it first or install it any time? What can I expect for milage loss? I plan on leaving the transmission stock but will turn up the line pressure when I change the fluid and filter, in about a year. Haven't installed gauges yet, but will within the next few months. I will only be towing 6K on a flatbed about twice a month until spring, 300 mile round trip. Would you put gauges on for this small load or can I wait until Spring when I start pulling the camper, which only weighs 8K.

Thanks for your advice,

Doug:p

Hello Doug,

The Edge EZ is a great place to start as far as upgrades go. It is absolutely safe to install this unit on a brand new truck, so to answer your question, you can install the EZ anytime.

As far as mileage goes, it all depends on how much you keep your foot in it. If you drive your truck conservatively with the EZ, you can actually gain 1mpg.

Your stock automatic transmission should be just fine with just the EZ alone. Anything more than this, will require some type of automatic transmission upgrade such as an upgraded valve body and a more efficient torque converter.

As far as gauges go, my suggestion is to install at least a boost and exhaust gas temperature gauge now. With just the EZ installed, it is not required to have gauges, but highly recommended. Gauges add more to your truck than just something fun to watch. You can actually use them to trouble shoot your engine if need be. So my suggestion would be to at least install a boost and EGT gauge now.

Hope this information helps.

Give me a call sometime.

I will be more than happy to discuss your upgrades with you and help you out in any way I can.

Early EZ instal

D White, you can't go wrong with the above advice from ADT, either Andy or Doug will not steer you wrong.

I would reccommend installing gauges first however. Since you are planning on towing I would think that a boost, EGT and Auto trans temp gauge a minimum.

The Ez box is a great addition to your truck, and will make driving and towing a pleasure.

My only concern is the extra torque available and what it might do to the lockup clutch without turning up the trans pressures. My local trans shop did this for me, I printed out Bill Kondolay's instruction page, and took it with me, they dropped the trans pan, backed out the screw three turns replaced the gasket, refilled all for $30. It was well worth it. I like the slightly firmer shifts and later shifts, and I don't sweat stomping on the go pedal at 75mph and putting all that torque through the overdrive and lockup clutch.

Enjoy your new truck! Greg L

Doug,

Since you have a 2002, I must assume you're in the same boat that I am. You can't install an Edge EZ until Power Edge gets its act together and provides adapters for the 2002 MAP sensor. I've been sitting here with an EZ for a 2001 ever since our truck arrived on August 15th. I got an e-mail from Edge last week advising that they are still at least a month away from having the adapters. :(

Looks like if Power Edge doesn't have all the pieces together yet for the 2002's, I will get all my gauges installed while waiting. From all I have read, that is probably the best thing to do anyways. I haven't bought the EZ unit yet and didn't realize they weren't available for another month. :(

Could you post Bill Kondolay's instruction page so when I take my 98. 5 in for trans service I can get them to do the same thing on mine?

I'm totally satisfied (for now) with mine the way it is, but in the future... ... ...

TIA

Thanks Bob

Thanks Bob, that's the page I printed out for the trans shop.

The photo shows the drivers side of the valve body, but not in a trans. When installed in the transmission, the valve body is up inside the trans case, and the forward allen screw is only about 3/4" away from the side of the case. So a 3/16" allen wrench that is cut off short is used to get at the adjustment screw.

The resulting higher pressures causes slightly firmer shifts, and slightly later shifts. I don't find either annoying.

Good luck!! Enjoy your Ram! Greg L

Had my pressure raised.

It's the only 3/16 allen on that side. hard to miss. Talk to Bill K. himself for a recommendation on how may turns are right for your driving style.

I liked the adjustment for what it was worth. The truck sorely needed something. With just the EZ it was fine but after the DD2's it was in sad shape. I am carrying a lot of weight so it will probably help you out more.

Now for the good news. Had my DTT stuff installed and WOW.

Save your pennies, it aint cheap but worth every cent. It's like a different truck.

My 2¢ worth,

Garrett

Heads Up

Dwhite, Be prepared to do some transmission work. the EZ alone COULD affect your transmission operation. when I put the EZ on, my stock transmission did not hold up to it. It would slip with moderate exceleration and would be real noticable with a 8000# load. The DDT stuff has helped alot.
