I figured I'd add an update here....

My truck finally gave me the "purge" John was explaining. I put the truck into "transport" mode and it said lowering. I heard the purge and sure enough, it tried to lower. Then I clicked off on transport mode and it returned to regular ride height. Again, nothing really happened due to no weight in the bed. I did this twice and got the same results. I heard the purge, it's distinct and sounds like what you'd think it would. Never heard that before ever on this truck. Also never heard the compressor run. It's either very quiet (and I left the door open to hear things better) or I didn't use enough air to demand it to run.

Clearly they don't all operate the same. Different trucks and different loads. Mine is a dually compared to John's SWR. That could be a factor as well.

Played a little more with this dead horse today :p

I have a pallet of heating pellets in the bed, 1 ton, and stood on the passenger side and actuated the NORM/ALT button with the key on and the engine off.

When I would turn ALT on it would purge air from the intake/exhasut line between the bed and cab on the pass side.

When I would turn ALT off it would fill the bags but not run the pump.

I did this 10 times and the pump didn't run once.

After 10 times the dash said battery low, start engine to adjust suspension height. So I am thinking the truck won't run the compressor if the engine is off since it always tops the tank off immediately after increasing ride height with the engine running and didn't today with the engine off. I can't complain about 10 cycles from just the tank air.

So there it is, again.... no doubts about an open system on the 3500.

We need somebody on here with a 2500 to tell us how it works.

I am in the process of buying a 2020 or ordering a 2021 (purchasing with Employee Purchase Plan) with the air suspension as discussed above. I have a 2006 (love this truck!) and always had "air bags" and on board air and use it a lot.
In regards to the newer trucks, do you find that they are worth the cost? I don't pull a 5th wheel any more but the wife has been bugging me to get a cab over camper.
The above discussion has been very interesting!

I would not own another Ram without the factory air suspension, never! Way better than aftermarket. Don't screw around, get the option. It's cheap too!

I just look on my fake build sheet. The cost would be $1520. That seems like a good deal!
That's cheap for integrated automated system covered under the truck warranties and the Chrysler service contract, if you choice one.

Worth every penny! Love mine, 5 years with ZERO issues now at 75,000.

Full RAWR 9,750# in pic. Looks the same without a load.
