I'm fixin' to commence to begin to start to deal with the KDP. Being the perfectionist type, and not having the jig available, I am planning to do it the hard way. That's by pulling off the timing case cover. But the fan and fan clutch have to come off first. I've read references to a special tool needed for the fan clutch. Looking at it, I see a big nut. (The TSM is terse on this point, unfortunately. ) Is that what has to come off? Can it be removed using a really big combination wrench? (I have a set of those. ) If I have to buy a special socket or wrench, who has it and what's the cost?

Thanks, all. Expiring minds want to know.

The fan nut is left hand thread. I used an air chisel with a very dull chisel and hit the corner of the nut about 3 seconds and it came loose easy. You can do the same thing with a hammer and chisel and then spin it off by hand. If you have a 5speed it will drop out the bottom easy, with an auto its a little harder because of the coolant lines.

Whoo hoo!

Left Hand Thread? Well, it actually makes sense. It's good to know that. I dunno how long I'd have tried to turn it the wrong way before I tumbled to that. Anyone know what size the nut is? Thx. Matt

The nut is 36 mm or 1 7/16 inch. You still need to hold the fan pulley. To remove the fan nut I used a "large" (about 4 inch bite) pair of channel locks on the pulley and a regular size cannel locks on the nut with a pipe cheater.

Matt, I can't remember if you E-mailed me or not cause so many have but I have Joe George's instructions on KDP fix that I can mail out if need be.

I had to grind the wrench down a bit so that it would fit in there.

What I did was put a socket on the alternator pully, I think this is a funny size too, like 18mm???

Hold this,I used a breaker bar, then rap the large wrench that's on the fan nut. Might take a few hits, but mine fell right off.

I bought an 1 3/8" and opened the jaws up a little so that it would fit tight. I spent a little more on the wrench than I wanted but it looks like I may have 3 other trucks to do besides mine. I bought a Craftsman so that if it breaks. . I get a new one.

Matt: I found a real fan nut wrench at a discount tool store. It has to be pretty thin to fit. I had quite a time getting that nut loose until the lights came on and I used a flat ended punch with big hammer. Three raps on the flat of the nut and loose, loose, loose. Everything comes apart in a pretty straightforward manner after the fan is off. Hardest part for me was getting that seal in. I got it started crooked and had to remove all those little cover bolts again to get it off. Then I pressed the seal in with a vise before reinstalling the cover. Good luck!

I just returned from Cummins SW, where I bought two seals. That's due to my documented history of misaligning 2% of the seals I install.
