Did any of you guys have trouble with the nut on the clutch being VERY tight?

I'm holding pulley with an 18" Pipe wrench.

Have a K&D clutch nut wrench with a torque wrench as additional leverage.

I'm turning Right/Clockwise to loosen it. It should be a left handed thread.

Can't budge it. Tried giving the wrench a few hits with a rubber mallet to break it loose.

When I was pulling with everything I had, I heard the torque wrench click. I was curious to what I had the wrench set at..... 120 ft lbs!

Dodge dealer replaced the clutch in 1996.

Service manual says torque should be 42 ft. lbs.

Any suggestions?

Bill, mine was a bear also. I had to have someone hold the pipe wrench while I hit my 1"drive breaker bar with a 4 lb dead blow hammer, got it on the first whack. I'll use antiseize when I replace it. Another case where what seemed like a 5 minute job turned into an hour.

Thanks illflem,

I was begining to worry. I read threads where guys pulled the fan for the winter. Nothing was ever mentioned about any difficulty removing the **** thing. #ad

Ordered a Vice Grip Chain Wrench to hold the pulley with. Can you believe I looked in Sears, Home Dummies, Lowes and 4 local hardware stores and nobody carries them?

Bill, the place to find the more oddball vicegrips is at a larger welding supply. I bought mine at place called Ox-Arc,they're all over the west, not sure about on your side of the country. The chain type will work great for what you're doing,I use mine mostly for clamping odd shapes together for welding. Granger has them also.
While you're waiting if you have a heat gun,try that on it,I've had excellent results.

When I put my horton on, I took a large BRASS punch/drift pin and turned the fan for the flattest spot and gave it a couple of whacks. Loosened it right up. Go with brass as to not damage the nut by taking a couple hits.

At A. W. D. we use an air chisel with a long, blunt tipped drift in the chuck and two or three short burps and it's spinning off on its own. The trick is short, sharp tapping with anything hard, like a dead blow hammer or a steel hammer.

I got my Vice Grip Chain Wrench at a True Value hardware store. Another place to look would be a bearing and industrial supply. I bought a real bruiser chain wrench made by OTC there that I have used with a long pipe to remove gland nuts from hydraulic cylinders. The thing I really want to know is which way do the threads go on clutch? I know some of the Phords have/had left hand threads. Are ours RH or LH thread?

Be careful using a chain wrench or vice grips on the pulley. It would not take mutch to bend that pulley. I made a special tool to hold the hub. I looks like a large "C" washer with a long handle attached. It has holes spaced to match the bolt heads that hold the pully to the hub. When you put the handle up against something solid, you can remove the fan without damageing anything.
If everything else fails you can borrow it.
And yes the threads are "left hand".

Another thing I'd try would be the new strap wrenches from Sears. I got my dad some for CHRISTmas but havn't been able to "test" them yet #ad

Take a long drift punch or steel rod put on the hex of the nut and give it a solid blow, you will want a tip about 1/2 inch. - 3/4 better. do a couple sides. Iuse a large pair of channel pliers/some times called water pump pliers. mine are from snap -on- and opened all the way fit across the diam. of the pulley. Another trick is to put a long pipe over your ratchet handle for more pulling power.
If you have a helper ,while your are pulling on the wrench have some smack the one onthe nut a soild blow withe a hammer.

Got it!

I just needed to give the clutch nut a few hits with a 3lb hammer and a long drift. It loosened right up. #ad

While in Sears I found a Universal Pulley Holder/Fan clutch tool kit. It came with 2 long wrenches. The smaller one fit the fan nut. Also includes pulley holder. A long sissors type bar that holds onto the heads of the pulley hub nuts. Decent tool. Good quality package.

Its K & D Part # 3472. Regular price $39. 99. Clearence price $20. 00. I was reading a Horton installation article in the TDR where the author spend $52 for just the wrench.

Thanks for the tips guys. #ad
