Our 2000 KME fire engine has the 330 HP ISC Cummins. The engine fan is a direct drive unit. It works... . too well. It takes forever for the engine to warm up and I think its way way too loud for normal driving. Would be so much quieter w/o the fan howling when driving normally.

It was an option for us to get a Horton unit. However KME didn't offer them up on paper... apparently we had to request one. And I didn't know we'd really need one. Usually they are listed in the options on commercial cab fire trucks but not the custom cab/chassis.

Only thing is when you use one on a fire truck, its supposed to be wired so it locks up when pumping so as to prevent sensor failure and overheating. No problem.

Are Hortons the only clutches available of their type? I talked with Horton but they actually don't act like they want to sell anything. They were just kinda ho-hum about helping me figure out what I needed and basically said call back when you find the part number on your own.

I have a Holiday Rambler Endeaver motorhome and I discovered the same problem right after I took delivery of my coach several years ago. I did a little research and found out Monaco with the help of Cummins developed a 2 speed electric fan clutch, the way it works is to drive the fan about 60 percent eng speed and when the ecm or you tell it to lock up it goes to 1-1. I installed a fan control switch on the dash and the other thing is that about 1 to 1 1/2 minutes after the exhaust brake comes on the ecm engages the fan for more additional braking and you can feel the coach slow down when it comes on. I also found it made the coach more quiet inside which is something you probably don't care about. I got most of my info from the main research guys at Cummins factory but you could find out a little more from Monaco I think, I don't remember all the details but think the actual clutch unit was german made and very high quality

Noise is one of my big concerns too. The fan is big and when its spinnin at 2000 rpm... you know it. It makes two way radio traffic inside the cab nearly impossible under accelleration and highway speeds. In fact... I don't know why builders go through all the trouble of sound insulation and such when the fan defeats the purpose. There are National Fire Protection Association guidelines on the decibal max in a cab... and I think were at or above the limit.

Otherwise the ISC seems like a quiet engine.
