David Muench offered up the idea of having a FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) thread for the forum to help assimilate some of the most common repeating questions. So we're giving it a try. Once this gets too big we'll potentially make it into a web page link. This is not a thread to post questions/topics to; but a place to do quick look-ups if its something you know you've seen a lot of before.

3rd Gen Non-Drivetrain FAQ

I am going to start to compile a FAQ list in this thread. Please do not reply directly to this thread. I do need suggestions for Q's (with A's would be nice :)) though, please send those to me in a

private message. Please don't post them in this thread. Corrections are very welcome.

This is a work in progress, hopefully it will become very useful in the future.

Q. How can I track the status of the new Ram I just ordered?

A. Visit this site: Ordering Status.

Q. What size tires can a stock 4x4 2500/3500 single rear wheel truck fit?

A. Up to a BFG All Terrain 315/70-R17 fits on the stock 17x8" wheels with no clearance problems.

Q. How do I recalibrate my speedometer for my new big tires?

A. The dealer or anyone with the appropriate scan tool can reprogram the truck. It's under the ABS system to change the tire size. It needs to know the number of revolutions per mile. For a BFG AT/KO 315/70R17 that is 601 revs/mile.

Q. What size spare will fit under the truck in the stock location?

A. A BFG All Terrain 315/70-R17 will just barely fit. Be careful of the wiring loom on the framerail when cranking the tire up.

Q. Does anyone make a front end leveling kit for the 3rd gen 4x4's yet?

A. The leveling kits from the 2nd gens fit the new 3rd gens with no problems. Companys like Tuff Country and Daystar (among others) make kits.

Q. What color paint do I need to paint my new A-pillar gauge mount to match the factory A-pillar?

A. The color is Light Taupe (not regular Taupe) and is available in a spray can from your dealer. When I recieved the paint, the can actually said "Natural Beige". Whatever. The paint code is TL2 and the part number on the lid of mine is 05010128-AA. It appears to be a perfect match.

Q. Can I fit 16" or 16. 5" rims on a 3rd gen?

A. No, the brakes are so big that anything less than a 17" rim won't have enough clearance.

Q. Does the 3500 SRW come with the clearance lights in the middle of the tailgate?

A. No, only the duallys. The 3500 does come standard with the cab clearance lights though, SRW or dually.

Q. I don't like the clearance lights in the middle of the tailgate of my dually. Can I remove them?

A. They are a DOT requirement. Remove at your own peril.

Q. I want to replace the factory stereo with an aftermarket stereo. What adapters do I need?

A. The adapters are new for the 3rd generation Rams. 2nd gen cable adapters or mounting kits won't work. In addition you will probably need an antenna adapter for the new style antenna plug.

Q. I messed up and didn't get the rear load floor when I ordered my truck. Can I add it now?

A. Not easily. People have priced out the parts needed and it exceeds $1,100.

Q. What's the Front Hood Protection Shield factory option code XJL?

A. It's not plastic film (that can be a dealer installed option though), it's a color matched (or chrome) plastic bug deflector.

Q. What the heck is an UGDO?

A. Universal Garage Door Opener. Also known as HomeLink I believe. It's integrated into the ceiling console on the Laramie trucks.

Q. Are the trailer tow mirrors powered?

A. Yes, although they look just like the late 2nd gen tow mirrors, they are powered and heated.

Q. What's the logic to all the different grille styles?

A.
  • Gray shell, gray grille - ST trim
  • Chrome shell, gray grille - SLT trim
  • Body colored outer ring, chrome crosshairs - Laramie trim
  • Body color outer ring and crosshairs, chrome billet-looking grille - Sport (could be SLT or Laramie)

Q. How do I get body colored bumpers and/or grille?

A. That's the Sport package (option code AGG). It also comes with a few other things.

Q. I really like the "billet" grille from the Sport, but I don't want the monochrome Sport package.

A. The grille is available from Mopar, part number 82207849. It fits non-sport trucks.

Q. Where can I get plastic rear fender liners?

A. They are Mopar part number 82207367, and are very easy to install (15-30 minutes).

Q. I want all my doors to unlock at once instead of pushing the keyless remote button once for the driver's door and again for the rest.

Q. Can I turn off the horn honking when I lock the truck with the keyless remote?

A. Yes to both, check your owner's manual for the procedure (approximately page 19).

Q. What are my options for mounting gauges?

A. There are all the usual options - A pillars (1, 2, or 3 gauges), steering column mounts (1 or 2 gauges), and adapter plates to put gauges in the cubby hole below the radio.

Q. Where can I get a factory service manual for my Ram?

A. Either order from your dealer, or visit the Tech Authority web site. You can order it either as normal paper books or on CDROM.

Q. What are the part numbers for RS9000X shocks for the 3rd Gen Ram 4x4?

A. Front stock height is 99221. If you are running the Kelderman front air-ride (0-4"), it is 99113. Rear stock height is 99269.

Q. Who makes the stereo in my Ram?

A. This answer was contributed by member jzaremski. By model:
