There are 2 different types of high idle programs available for the automatic transmission vehicles. The one you guys are describing where after a set amount of time the engine automatically idles up to 1000rpm's, and a different one, where you can set the idle speed by using the cruise control feature and can be set from 1000 to 1500 rpm's if I recall correctly.

The automatic one that turns it up after a set amount of time to 1000 rpm's works on all trucks. The one that is not currently offered for the manual transmissions is the one that you can set yourself using the cruise control, and this is the one I want to find a way to enable ourselves or push DC for a TSB on so we can have it as well.

Why do we need it? Is wet-stacking an issue with common-rail diesels? I understand about building up some water temp for comfort in the winter but is that it?

Most manual trannies have a neutral safety switch. I don't know if these do. Maybe that's the issue. But they know when the parking brake is on so they should be able to rely on that being set. Maybe the parking brake won't hold if the truck is in 1st gear 4-low?

I would say yes. I don't think the fuel system has any effect on stacking. Besides, I can watch my truck water temperature drop at stop lights in cold weather so you know cylinder temps are way down.

I'm not sure what you are talking about. My '03 6spd. high idles by itself below a preset temp. Are you talking a on-demand high idle?

Yeah, I have noticed that my new 05 does that as well. I thought it was freak chance

mine high idles all the time, no matter the weather or operating temp

if I drag the clutch with my foot on the brake, it'll drop back to normal idle

mine doesn't need to idle for any length of time. i can pull to a stop light, 70 degree weather full operating temp and the thing will idle at 1000 RPM

Jeff, something's wrong with yours. You're having pretty marginal luck with this truck...

The answer to all the why I need a high idle comes directly from Cummins. You may contact them for a copy of the bulletin stating a Cummins engine should not be idled for more than 10 minutes at low idle, otherwise damage will occur to injectors etc. . due to an incomplete combustion burn.

If you are going to let your engine idle in sub zero weather you must idle it at 1500rpms to generate enough heat to prevent engine damage & get the cab warm. All the OEMs know this & we still don't have a manual high idle function on all trucks..... :(

$500 for a high idle is ridiculous...

Cost me less than $20 for a high idle on my 94...

Looks like I'll create something.

Took the truck into the dealer this morning for a cold soak start problem... (makes enough black smoke to cover up an entire house) & they said they would contact the dodge rep for the latest software updates & advise.

BTW, I got a ride back in a sprinter w/ the Mercedes diesel. Cold soak start this morning in that thing produced ZERO smoke... . interesting... .
