Hi folks I am curious about a controller you can install to idle the engine up. I know there is a calibration from dodge that should idle up the engine. However I have found this to be hit and miss whether it work like it is supposed to or not. I am looking for a controller that will allow me to idle the engine up either with a switch or some type of controller. I found a kit a while back at www.dieselservices.com but I cant get the website to come up now. I want to idle the engine up in the winter time to maintain engine temp. I am putting a pto on the truck run a crane and air compressor and need to speed it up than as well. If there is perhaps a dodge dealer tech or somebody that installs service bodies or pto's on these trucks that could tell me how control the idle. I have a pto on the truck and need to be able to control the idle speed. It is an 01 3500 with a 24 valve and a 6spd. If you need more info or questions feel free to ask. Thanks for the help guys.

There are several mfgs that do that. I have a Quadzilla XZT+ box that is one of the only mfg's out there that allow you to reprogram the box via USB cable from a laptop and free downloads from the mfg. The box it'self has a three position switch. 1:Stock, 2: 35hp mileage max and 3: 70hp. I have a tuning file that use, that when in the stock position, the engine will run at normal idle for two min then speed up to 1200 rpm and stay there til you touch the throttle or brake or change switch position to either of the two other positions. There may be an idle only controller, but I dont know of it... I know Ford had an external controller used in Ambulances etc but I don't know if Dodge ever offered such

I have it on my o4. 5 - but i forgot how to use it , would someone refresh my brain on how to use it ? I think cruise control has to be on or something like that ? Let me know

could always cut a broom handle to fit between the seat and the pedal and adjust idle by moving your seat forward or back. Maybe a little bit on the redneck side but it works

Back when the 24 valve engines were new and aftermarket companies were creating new products for them I bought a small black plastic box for my '01 HO/six speed that mounted on the steering column with a knob like the on/off switch-volume control on a simple old car radio that connected to a wiring harness and would ramp idle rpm up incrementally to 1500 rpm.

I don't own the truck any longer and don't remember where I bought it. IIRC I learned about the product from TDR.

A vague, possibly incorrect memory makes me think I bought it from Larry B's, a TDR advertiser.

Perhaps someone else who owns a 24 valve remembers the fast idle box and the source.

The ECM has been capable of fast idle since 2005, possibly as early as the 2004. 5 model Cummins. All that was required was a trip to the dealer to have the dealer tech hook up his code reader and enable the fast idle mode.

It was operated by the cruise control buttons on steering wheel. Press "ON" to turn on Cruise Control (fast idle), press "SET", then press the "UP" button incrementally to increase idle rpm to desired speed.

Practical solutions used to make a box to control idle, The guys name was gordon, I can't remember where he was from or why he quit making them. I believe his website used to be www.practicalsolutions. biz, it no longer is. He also had a grid heater bypass kit, which turns off the grid heaters when the engine coolant is so hot to save on the batteries. I have a high idler, just like Hbarlow. They do not make them anymore. I've seen a few of these posts though and wonder how hard they would be to make? I like mine, I can idle it up to whatever I want, whenever I want. You could post a want ad for a Practical Soultions High Idler, maybe somebody has one to sell.

I installed a twist-lock throttle cable on mine. I mounted it in the knee panel above the accel pedal and drilled a hole in the top of the pedal just under where the cable attaches to go through the firewall. I can set it at any rpm I want to.

There are some pic's in my gallery.

That's it. Practical Solutions was the name. Like you, I don't remember much about it and haven't owned the truck since early '06.

Actually, my daughter and sil still own the truck and the box is still on it but I rarely see the truck. I don't think they would be interested in removing it even though they have no idea what it is for.

This fellow did a lot of work... . take a look at this. It will do everything you ask.

High Idle

BD Diesel Electronic Governor Control

Try this one out

I know it is a lot more money, but I think I remember something about the practical solutions version that set codes above a certain point. I don't remember too much, but I think that it does not break the IVS it only changes the voltage.

It looks like, from the pictures, that the BD plugs into the ECM harness, which would engage the pto function.
