Anyway to hook up a fast idle device for us guys without cruise control, tried the stick propped against the seat, was fun but could use something more sophisticated.

Aloha,
How do you get a fast idle with a cruse control? I could have used that feature the other day Winching myself out of a mudhole with my hydraulic winch.
Mahalo for the info. . Jim

Hello,
(You can't use the aftermarket throttle control because it uses the Cruise throttle solinoid)

I am working on two ideas for my 99.
First lo-tech:
I bought a twist lock cable control from NAPA autoparts for $22. Currently I am using it with a newly drilled hole in the very top lever of the gas pedal assembly. This works but I fear the cable may interfere with the pedal's operation.
2nd higher-tech:
I am trying to get more information on the throttle position sensor in hopes of installing a simple dash knob that will fool the sensor into thinking I have my foot on the pedal. Downside here is how it will react to vibration (don't want unexpected acceleration while driving).
OTHER:
Some have had luck with aircraft vernier controls. Search the forum, I think there was a link to the parts supply.

SCOTT1 & OTHERS: Where did you connect your idle controls at the engine end??

Instead of going directly to the acclerator arm with the cable, buy a short length of "bead chain" or "ball chain" at any large hardware store (same thing as a lot of key rings). They have a heavy duty type. Connect ball chain between end of cable and the acc. arm and leave a little slack, I made a right angle bracket and popriveted to acc. arm. Works fine. Used a Mercedes Diesel idle control which is a vernier type twist button that you can mount either thru the knee pad or anywhere else you want it. Total set up around 60. 00 but worth it.

Doc Tinker,

Doc, in my service manual there is a caution against adjusting the screw you are talking about. Has something to do with throwing the fuel control, pump out of sync. Not sure what the end result would be but the book says it is a no-no on the 98. 5 24v ISB.

Doc,
Info in my 98. 5 manual is under "Fuel injection system". Refers to "Accel. Pedal Position Sensor [APPS]. The warning is a big bold CAUTION.

CAUTION: Do not attempt to remove sensor from its mounting bracket as electionic calibration will be destroyed (sensor to bracket screws are permanently attached). Two accelerator lever set screws (Fig. 4) are used to position the lever. Do not attempt to alter the positions of these set screws as electronic calibration will be destroyed.

I honestly have not dug deeply into exactly who controls what with the computer system but my WAG (Wild A** Guess) is that the idle is controled by the computer and the APPS is somehow thrown into the mixture. Here in East Texas we have a lot of EXPERTS [Def: Ex is a has been, Sperts are a drip under pressure] but none of them know come 'er from sick 'em about how all of our magic boxes work.
Sorry this got so long but hope it keeps someone out of trouble or at least the cost of having to pay the dealer for setting the system right.

ok here's a low tech idea that works great.
get a gear shift lever/ cable(like on 10 spd bike) from your local bike store. I mounted mine on the shift stick, ran the cable down ,under the rubber boot/floor covering to the underside of dash. fitted a set screw to the top accel. pedal. (metal part) ran the cable thru set screw adjusted the slack ,zip tied everything.
click it up to your desired idle and it stays put. can also used bike brake handle for hand control throttle but wont lock into position like the shifter.

Or ...

If you just want to purchase a kit with all of the stuff already assembled, try Rubicon Express. Website at http://www.rubiconexpress.com

Look for their hand throttle. The directions stink, but it's a complete kit. Got one on my Jeep.
