Jim, it's much harder to campaign a 2wd. They don't want to launch hard. Jeff had the same problem with his truck a couple years ago. Compared to the 4x4 we are lighter sure, but a 4x4 will outrun us everytime without significant chassis mods.

I agree with Nowell that it is harder to be consistent and therefore "winning" with a 2wd truck and no street truck is going to catch Jeff's truck... yet anyway. At the weight of the typical street truck it would take around 1100hp at the wheels to run a 10. 74. If you had the 1100hp it wouldn't be what I'd call a reliable daily driver.



Jeff ran low to mid 12's with his truck in full street trim. That was in 1999 and beginning the 2000 season the truck was removed from the street completely. My point is weight WILL prevent us all from going faster. Our driving technigues will need to be polished to get everything we can from the launch without leaving ET back on the concrete, but I've seen it possible. How about a 1. 9 60' with an open diff, on street tires in a daily driver 94 2500? Matt Wells did it this weekend in Bradenton.



But I learned Saturday, it's hard to launch a 2wd when you have to peddle it out of the hole. I was all over the place this weekend. My 60' ranged from 1. 79 to 1. 92. When I race my 2500 4x4, make a few passes ( They are pretty much dead-on pass to pass) and as long as the driver doesn't fall asleep (ME) I have a nice consistent truck that is much easier to bracket race than the Dakota.

Hang on here HVAC, you may need to think about this a little bit. If I put giant slicks on the back (they were actually 34") and I had 32" on the front and I was 4wd, I probably wouldn't make it 300ft. The transfer case or something else would have a hard time handling the two different tire speeds.



I only ran slicks on the back in 2wd. I hooked up just fine ask Jim (he was in the other lane).

Keep in mind that a lot of tracks are VERY stingy with the VHT traction compound... .combine that fact with the different surfaces available at the skinny end of the track and you have yourself a lot of important variables to deal with.

To be honest I don't know, but they looked like some old 265's used on a daily driver.



Matt is correct though, some tracks are stingy when it comes to VHT. For me though, I would rather have to "drive" that 12 second pass than "ride" it. The 4WD leaves only reaction time and power output as the big variables. Traction is in most cases, not an issue.



ANYONE that can put a full size fully dressed 2wd in the 12's is doing ALOT right IMO. Jim, Christian, Eric, Doug, and others have unbelievably fast trucks that are heavy with most of it over the front wheels. Makes weight transfer hard to accomplish. In 2wd trucks, weight transfer can be more important than weight itself.



But answer this... Did anybody think back in 1994 we'd someday be talking about them running into the 11's?

Jim congrats on your run , I guess you like the Caltracs . The bottom line to this thread 2WD vs. 4WD is no matter how much power you have if you cant get it to the ground it wont do you any good.

My opinion and the only experience I have was with a GMC Syclone (AWD) awsome bottom end 60 ft etc. but top end suffers because the front wheels cant freewheel. My guess is two trucks set up identically one 2WD the other 4x4 , the 2WD would show better mph in the top end vs. the 4x4 run in 4WD. Now put slicks on the 2WD and then I believe it would be faster overall.

Now four slicks on the 4x4 ????

Lots of people have put drag radials on all 4 corners on those trucks... .



I have driven one owned by TDR's very own "PHumblias" a few times that went 10. 97@126mph..... BFG drag radials all the way around..... brief all wheel burnout in the burnout box..... it just hooks and goes.



Granted... . it will never turn a 1. 20 60'... . but the AWD is sweet for launches.



If we only had a AWD system as smart and adjustable as the Nissan Skyline GTR (AWD).....
