My point is....those of you under 26,000 lbs GVW are not required to be enrolled in a drug consortium.

If I had my own authority I would have to be enrolled in a drug consortium no matter what weights I operated at. Being leased to a MC I fall under whichever drug consortium they are contracted with. The screenshot you posted is from a 3rd party, not the FMCSA. It is an advertisement and not necessarily accurate.

Question 7: Which drivers are to be included in a alcohol and controlled substances testing program under the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA)’s rule?

Guidance: Any person who operates a Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV)s, as defined in §382.107, in intrastate or interstate commerce and is subject to the CDL requirement of 49 CFR part 383.

OK, I give. After rereading the FMCSA guidance it appears you are correct. A loophole for those who haul light loads on light duty trailers yet fall under the definition of a commercial vehicle. I guess the company doesn't want to go through the trouble of special requirements for a hand full of drivers.

I just can't imagine anyone going through the trouble and expense of getting their own authority with the intention of staying under 26.001 GCWR.

I may be looking into this myself when the Emperors mandates take effect, I will be fired. I have a CDL and a one ton. I dont really want to put miles on my truck and CDL drivers are in short supply so a trucking company is probably my first bet. This really isnt my lifes calling but sometimes you have to do what you have to do...maybe I'll see you out there!

If you have to make a living at it then using your pickup is the last resort. Every trucking company in the nation is hiring and more than likely every one of them pays better than wearing out your pickup. The majority of them employ less than 100 people so the Emperor's mandate won't affect them.

My non CDL DOT physical had a pee test but it was for sugar related to diabetes, which was a standard test not related to any of my metrics that flagged that. It was done in office while the other stuff was being run.

I took a DOT drug test because I thought it was required, it was not, I also checked new hire because it was a brand new DOT number, that was another mistake because those expire in 30 days. So it really was a complete waste of $30.

So if you do under 26,001 skip the DOT Drug testing, if you decide to do it and are an existing established person don't do the new hire box.
