Looking at a new Gooseneck Flatbed

I recently welded up a rack for the back of my fifth wheel to carry the kids toys, bikes and bulky stuff. Now I need a new spot to mount the spare tire.

I see that some of the new fivers have the spare tire under the chassis in the front... . between the landing gear. Anybody know how they are mounted and if there is anywhere to get the respective parts?

Something like the crank up mounts used under our trunks would work pretty well if there was a way to bolt or weld them to the frame cross members.

My Montana has a cable and crank mount like that under the rear for the spare. Don't like it! Cables do break and I am afraid of the spare passing me on the road some day. No way to cable it up either. I have been looking for a way to mount it in a reachable spot but have not come up with anything yet. Go to a dealers lot and check out a Montana or the like and see what I mean.

I've had trailers for 15 years with the spares mounted underneath with a cable winch to lift the tire up. I've never had a problem. Also it keeps the spare out of sight out of mind and out of the sun.

I put a cargo carrier on the back of my TT for my Honda 3000. I just put a plate on the carrier with a through bolt to carry the spare tucked under the carrier. This was a 225-15. My Everest with 235-16 E rated tires has a cable winch and it works great. I use the same socket on my DeWalt 18V drill to raise and lower the spare that I use on the stabilizers.

Sounds like the cable winch will work fine but I can't find anyone who sells them aftermarket. Anyone have any ideas? I have a local dealer checking to see if any of the OEM trailers have them available as spare / replacement parts.

Go to a junk yard and pickup a cable crank system from an old Pickup. I know chevy had then since at least the 80's. Mine has a square frame under the Rv, in the back, that is hinged in the front. the tire sits on this frame, and you loosen a 3/4" nut on all thread to swing down the frame. (looks like a PITA to do), but its out of the way.

Mike, I picked up a spare tire mount off a Dodge pickup at a wrecking yard. I did this so that I could use the tire tools that came with my truck. I fabricated a frame for the crank gearbox and bolted it to the frame. Works like a charm and have about $30 in it.
