Finally getting gages, need EGT advice!

Howdy Fellers!



I know, I know... I should've had gages along time ago. But I've been saving my pennies up to pay off my truck, and I just paid it off on 4/5/03.



Now I'm in the process of getting gages. I have some final questions to ask. I'm gonna ask you guys questions, one gage at a time, to resolve this as quickly as possible.



Question - Where to put the EGT probe? Before or after the turbo? That is the question...



Up to a couple months ago, I thought, through reading on here, that there was a place in the stock exhaust post-turbo that was pre-threaded for an EGT probe. And if that had been the case, I would've just gone post-turbo. But I think what I've heard (and this is what I want to confirm from you guys) that the stock exhaust has no such fitting. I'm gonna go home and check my truck to confirm also. And that what I read was that some exhaust brakes in the downpipe have a place for an EGT probe.



If there is no place in the stock exhaust (post-turbo) for an EGT probe, then I'll go pre-turbo. From what I've read it seems to be more beneficial to be pre-turbo anyway. What are you guys thoughts on this?

There is no place predrilled so put it pre-turbo and read the numbers that are important.

If you don't go pre turbo you will never know your TRUE EGT.

I think most exhaust brakes that install immediately after the turbo replace the stock elbow and have a port in them (at least PacBrake does). That is probably what they were referring to.

Only 1 place if BOMB'ed ...

& that's pre-turbo.



With a stock HX35-12 @ 32psi, I was measuring 950 to 1000 post turbo. Moved it to pre turbo, repeated the run ... 1500.

What dremelts said. My BD has tapped ports in the elbow. DONT put it there. Tap the exhaust manifold and put it where it belongs for good readings. Its not a bad job at all. The worst it will be is buy a drill bit, a tap and pencil magnet and 15 minutes its done right. Go to TST web site for full instructions on where to drill, its easy.

My truck (4th Dodge Cummins) just got probed yesterday. I installed it post turbo for reading the temperature coming off the turbo for shutdown temps. The turbo retains alot of heat and a pre-turbo reading won't reflect when it's cooled enough to shutdown. My trucks are bone stock so I'm not as concerned about pre-turbo reading.

The elbow on an '03 is way down there from above and way up there from below. A slight PITA to remove and replace. The manifold would have been easy but I like post turbo.
