This has meen a major hemroid. I can't find a shop that would remove it, Obviously they are scared of the Law. You know what though I asked every shop and they said, "you probobly don't want to remove that CAT because with that engine being controlled via computer it may and WILL throw your engine performance out of wack! Does anyone know if this is true? Will it effect the engine or valves because there would be no back preasure?

Every wehre I go I get a differant answer from differant shops, after reading posts I see alot of people run straight pipes from the turbo... Has anyone had problems?

I cleaned my CAT and reinstalled it!! #ad

My computer probably knows I'm gettin about 2-3 MPG better than when it was exhaling through a dirty CAT. #ad

Get that thing off there and clean it out. Or get the test pipe. Keep the Cat if you don't clean it, just in case.

Scary, you will have to find a shop that doesn't deal mainly with exhaust systems. Muffler shops won't remove it because they can lose their smog control certification over it. The reason they are telling you the BS about the computer is that they are more familiar with gas engines that most times have an oxygen sensor installed in the cat connected to the computer. Try just a regular mechanic.

Illflem,

I did call Cummins south and wanna laugh? They are the ones that confirmed when i had doubt, so this is Cummins south saying, "if you remove the CAT it will screw up performance. "
Go figure thats why I posted on TDR to get advice and help. Because to tell you the truth I am completely confused.

Shops can't deviate from the emmission laws. At least not with impunity! They just have their livelyhoods at stake - you don't! Good luck finding a shop that's trying to get shut down and fined to the hilt!

You might try just showing up at a shop and asking. They might react differently if they see you in person.
I went to the local Wall mart, bought a $15. 00 air operated die grinder and cut that sucker off. Oh yea, youll need a reinforced cutoff wheel.
The pipe was about $55. 00 from the DC dealer. You can save $$$ if you have one made up. I dont have the measurements.

Maybe you need to go to a less "reputable" shop #ad
So what if the guy's butt crack shows every time he bends over #ad
and he's smoking that stinkin' cigar? He'd probably whip any EPA guy's *** who tried to say something to him anyway #ad

Scary:

Go down to your local Dodge dealer
and order the "Catalyic Converter
Test Pipe. " Mine cost around $40. 00.
I will get the part # for you later
today.

Now, go to a shop (or Dodge) and just
tell them the truck "has a serious
lack of power and you believe the cat
is plugged up and want to see for sure. "

You drive out to "test it" and don't
go back!

BTW, that "test pipe" was designed for
that purpose and fits perfectly on the
exhaust system. I know because I have
one.

I will post the part number for you
later.

John,

That may work... But the only thing is the delaer I'd use is a 5 star service center. My point is I don't think the're dummies. But you do have a point. Maybe I was approaching it the wrong way saying my EGT was so darn high, maybe if I just approach it from, "the plugged CAT, loss of power" angle something can get done.

Another (much more expensive) option is to get a 4" exhaust system. As for getting the part from the dealer, I don't see why it would be a problem. Its money in their pocket and its legal. Just give them the part number and have them order it.

Scary:

The part number for the "Catalytic
Converter Test Pipe" is #52019170AB.

There is a shop near Atlanta that
at one time had an advertisement
in the TDR Links. If I remember
right it was; Southern Truck and
Diesel. Anyway the owner did alot
of high performance work to the
Dodges. I will try to find the
exact name and phone # for you.
Maybe he could help you. If I
was closer I would do it for you!

Scary:
What I did was soaked the clamps/hangers and joints with pentrating oil for a few days. Made two relief cuts 180 deg. appart on the front flange of the cat with an angle grinder. Take care not to cut too far into exhaust pipe. Removed the spare tire for clearance, unbolted and removed all clamps from the front of the cat back to the exhaust tip plus most of the hangers. Then by pulling and twisting at the tail pipe pulled the kitty off. It also helps if you have Geno's muffler eliminator kit already installed. Once I separated the exhaust pipe from at the front of the kitty, I unbolted the balancing-point hanger and worked the whole assembly up over the rear axle and out onto the driveway where I could finish separating the offensive kitty from the good part of the exhaust system. Reassemble with the Mopar "test pipe" in place of the kitty and your're ready to rumble.

Thanks to all that helped... with the personal assitance of "hickster" I was able to get the fooker off. I used a 3' pipe and still have the muffler on for know. Question is it normal for smoke and funny smells? I drove 120 miles since the removal just wondering #ad
Thanks in advance.
If I just had the $$ for a BOMB run #ad

when removing the cat to install the test-pipe is it necessary to unbolt the down pipe from the turbo exhaust elbow? I wonder if all the twisting and "persuasion" needed to remove the cat will cause damage to the turbo housing or exhaust manifold (stress cracks, leaks, etc). Anyone know?

Scary:

Yes the smoke seems to be normal after
you remove he "cat. " The amount of smoke
that came out of mine originally was
UNBELIEVABLE!! It ook a couple of days
to get it all out too!
