Common sense and being truthful goes a long ways. I've crossed into the U. S. many, many times, usually at the Pacific crossing or Abbotsford/Sumas. I've never, ever encountered a bad experience with U. S. border guards. Shortly after 9/11 four of us guys had a trip planned to Reno for gambling (no, really?) and golfing. We arrived at the Blaine crossing at 0600 as our flight left Seattle at 1000 and figured we would be at the Blaine crossing for quite some time. We handed the guard our birth certificates, driver's licences, etc and answered his questions, which were few indeed. Three minutes at his booth and he wished us a good trip. Just be polite, honest and don't arrive at the booth with an attitude. FWIW, all my bad experiences have been with Canadian authorities coming back into Canada. Because I was in the Navy, they always thought I had been to Kesselring's buying a handgun. Don't know where they got that idea from.
