4BT Breaks it again, for the 3rd time,

Powerstroke into a Ram 2500?

24v Suburban

Just had my first bad experience of my engine swap-too much power! I stripped the splines off of my nvg (gm) 4500 output shaft and input to my np205 transfer case. These parts have only been in for about 4000 miles and now I am a little worried about the longevity of the replacement parts. Has any one else had similar experiences? I thought about upgrading to the dodge output shaft but the transfercase won't let me. I am hoping that maybe I had a bad input gear and that this will not be a reoccurring problem. :(

bummber dude!

I guess that mine is waiting to go also then. I am running the NVG 5 speed (GM) mated to the GM NP241. I have drag raced this thing at strip and power shift (once in a while) when I am having fun (over a year now). I think that you must have a weak shaft. What size is the output shaft? I think that the output on the 5 speeds are all the same (Dodge and Chev). Did you use an adaptor to mate the NP 205 to the GM 5 speed?

My 205 had significant wear on the input shaft and old transmission output shaft. Truck had several 100K miles and lived most of its life as a wrecker in W TX.

I assume you have the 32 splined input and output on trans and tcase? and which version tcase? Gm early or late model? which adapter?

dodge has a 29 spline output for the HD I think but i am pretty sure it is no bigger then the GM 32.

sounds like a missalignment or faulty material, no way should you have a problem unless you beat it or work it very hard.

fixed I hope

promac gave me a good suggestion, that dry splines

might be the culprit. When I originally assembled the NVG 4500 to the NP205 32 spline 1 3/8 inch shafts, I put them together dry. It seems as though not much oil splashes on the shaft from the transmission and none from the transfer case due to a seal, so upon reassembly I greased the pocket splines with e. p. grease and coated the male splines with anti-sieze, then overfilled trans. with an extra quart of oil. Hope this works. Oo.
