Well today I filled up the truck for the first time since taking delivery. The cheapest diesel within a 10 mile radius here in my area of So Cal was $1. 93/gal. I could drive 10+ miles to get it for $1. 84/gal in Long Beach at a truck stop but figured the drive wasn't worth it.

Besides the 65 or so miles driving home from the dealer, all of the driving has been stop and go city traffic.

The overhead computer showed an average of 11. 8 MPG. Hand calculation was 11. 899 MPG. This is filling up only till the pump clicked off.

The truck only has 394 miles on her so shes still wayyyy tight. The overhead now is staying in the 12 MPG figure so things look a little better.

While driving the freeway to fill-up, I really got into the throttle up to about 85 MPH. The truck shook violently above 80 MPH so I assume this is the death wobble people talk about. It was pretty rough but I still had no problem controlling the truck. The freeways here in So Cal are pretty tore up from Big Rig trucks anyway so that adds to it.

FROM PAST EXPERIENCE: My last truck was a 98 Ford Ranger 4wd with torsion bar front suspension and larger tires. On the freeway, it had this similar up/down shaking vibration. I just assumed it was a 4wd truck thing. It was so bad on certain stretches of freeways, the passenger seat with nobody sitting on it shook horribly making irritating rattles. My new Ram shakes but to a heavier truck extent if that makes sense.

I am not disputing the fact that the Death Wobble might be a safety concern and issue especially for young infants, rather I am stating IMHO that it just might be something common to 4wd trucks. While riding with a buddy in his 01 Duramax a while ago, it shook pretty good at highway speeds as well.

The shaking I speak of is a fast up/down heavy vibration that sometimes can even make talking a challenge (kind of like talking while quickly shaking your head up/down).

Death Wobble occurs as a result of hitting something, such as a pothole or bump, and having the front tires/suspension oscillate violently in response. This violent shaking will not cease until the vehicle is brought well below highway speed; in somce cases, a full stop is required. DW is so violent, it is impossible to steer, and just holding the steering wheel becomes difficult. It can happen at speeds as low as 40mph.

Since your problem was only at well-above legal speed, it is likely a balance issue - probably a front tire.

And a word of caution, if your LT-metric tires do not show a speed rating letter, they are only rated to 75 mph. Blowing a tire at a speed over that falls outside of the tire warranty - be careful if the pavement is that bad.

Get those tires checked freeway speeds in the LA area hit 90 sometimes with fast moving packs. That is one reason I left that area you guys drive like "NUT's"

Does that mean I can't putz along at 62 mph to stay under 2000 rpm? ;)

Our loops here in the Phoenix metro area are like that too. 55 mph signs mean go 80, 65 mph signs mean peg the needle. I drive the side streets during the road race times. :-{}
