Rear axle help

Well guys, I found the point at which our engines don't go past, and unfortunatly I went there. I just got in from plowing snow the past three days, and I know that I have been working my truck harder then ever, and everything seemed to be going ok minus my clutch and front leaf springs. When I popped the hood for the old post general inspection, I found oil seeping out of the no. 1 exhaust port :-{} Not good for the home team. I am currently thinking that I broke a ring, the odd thing is it really doesn't run any different, and I don't have the blue smoke that I would associate with a broken ring or holed-out piston. It isn't knocking or missing, and still sounds like normal.

My first step is going to be pulling the head to see what happened in there, and see what is salvagable. If any one is interested, I will take pictures and you can post them.

In the event that I have to pull the engine, I was wondering... who has figured out how to mount a hydro-boost set-up... . (Drivers Mopar????) because if I rebuild the engine, I may just sneak an inline on there :D

I was thinking about that, but the only time I have ever seen oil leaking out the exhaust... it is just bad :( That would however be real nice if it is just a head gasket, I can knock those out in no time ;)

Russell

HMMmm - hope I didn't misunderstand - I assumed you meant oil was leaking from the #1 port AREA, not from inside the port itself - and how would you have seen INSIDE that port without pulling the exhaust manifold?

If it is coming out the exhaust port on the head, may need a new valve/ guide or if they have rubber seals that fit over the valve stem it may need replaced.

If the oil gets to hot the fricking things get harder than 2 week old bread. At that point they won't keep the oil from running down the stem of the valve.

Yes!! A bad injector will cause what looks oil but smells like diesel to run out of an exhuast port. Generally it's from an injector that isn't atomizing the fuel correctly and is usually the worst at idle.

Dean

Well, things look better.

I had some of the other cummins heads at work look at it today, and they all seem to think that it is the injector. I tend to agree, because who knows how long I have been running it that way (couldn't open the hood if I wanted because of snow/ice) I just don't think it would have survived all of the governor touching ballistic plowing runs I have had to do. Plus, no serious blue smoke, loss of power, loss of oil, etc. I need to get some spare time to pull the injector out and pop test the thing, hopefully it is junk, then it's time for power wagons or maybe even lucas :D

Thanks for the input,

Russell

Russell,

I dont kow about the B series CTDs, but i have a friend whose For 7. 3 (89 model) was BURNING a gallon of oil every 50 miles. No huge leaks, and no blue smoke trail, just disappeared I have had a few CTDs that blew a little blue when cold, but didnt do anything to the oil level over 4-5K. Apparently, blue smoke and oil burning dont necessarily go together in diesels? AS always, I stand for correction.

BTW- thank goodness it was only an injector. Keep us updated.

Daniel

You are right about the blue smoke issue. Many times on large engines, it is an injector issue, on smaller engines it is normally a timing issue. I have been driving my truck without problems, and tomorrow I will pull out the injector and pop test the thing after work. I hope to find that it is detonated :D then I get to upgrade and get on with life :)

I'm assuming you mean the power steering pump assisted brake system? I used the system off an early 98 on mine. The only tricky part is shortening the brake rod, after mounting the unit directly to the firewall.

I will say it was definately worth doing. I can lock up all four 35" tires on my truck with ease.
