Well guys, those of you (local) who couldn't make our Sunday Sizzler event missed out on a special treat:p . President and CEO Nick Niakan of AFE was on hand, to talk about the new filter setup for the 2nd gen trucks. He also donated a generous box od goodies that were handed out to members.

Before I go any further, I want to publicly thank Nick for taking the time to come out and speak with us. He spent a good deal of time talking about air and fluid flow and how they apply to our trucks. He is class act guy who has an extreme passion for what he does - and it shows.

Now the cools stuff. Below are photos of the brand new system that was designed for the 2nd gen trucks. Keep in mind that this is the final prototype, but is NOT the production model. Nick assures me that production model will have a nicer finish, slightly more refined and will be the cadillac of filters available.

The design of the entire setup was based "Due to complaints of the current AFE cannon being too loud". He tells me these complaints (Primarily from the female co-pilots:rolleyes: ) prompted a new design, one that has been more than 6 months in the making.

Here it is!

This shows the complete setup. As you can see, the system is designed around an enclosed box, and due to the size and location of the box, a new intake tube was required.

This photo shows the new filter that is in the housing. This is the new filter (Stage 2) and has a 6" inlet.

Flow rates listed are for the filter only @ 1. 5" H2O :

Stage-2: 6" Flange ID flows 1270 CFM

Stage-1: 4-1/2" Flange ID flows 830 CFM

The filter is much quieter than the megacannon setup, even with the proguard filter media. The truck shown here has an HX40, and the turbo is still barely audible. The design allows the filter to be directed away from the fireway, (quieter) and allows the filter to draw air from the stock filter location through the fender.

It is a tight fit, but yes it does clear the hood.

The intake tube is necked down to the 4" inlet at the turbo side. It does maintain much of the 6" ID as it winds it way toward the turbo. There will be improvements made to the final production model, to try and expand the size slightly more on the top area where it comes near the hood. Much testing was done to determine the temperature ranges in that area, as it passes directly over the hot side of the turbo. The material that will be used in the final production model (not pictured here) l is Hi-Temp nylon rated at 450 F (melting point).

Any questions?

Nice work, Kev... . thanks.

I'll stick with my "noisy" Mega-Cannon, but I sure would like to find a source to make an intake tube similar to that one. I don't like the accordian tube.

Anyone know where I could find a source?

Nice!! Good looking setup and I hope its not too $$$.

Well... ... ... . keep in mind that ALOT of time and R&D went into this. On that note, preliminary pricing (MSRP) is in the upper $500 range.

For $500 the thing better clean itself on command as well as lower EGT's at the top end by 500*F!!! I know people will pay the money, but that's just insane! Is there any benefit besides noise? I mean, I have a Scotty II w/ my KSB1 that's loud as heck at 80 MPH, but for the $$$ I'll damage my hearing and take the consequences of not having to listen to the g/f.

I think more importantly then noise is the increased flow rate. Is it worth double the price? I don't know, how much air do our engines need at 40+ p. s. i. of boost?

Cool! Thanks Nick!

500 ain't too bad. My Volant was 320. and the afe looks Alot better. THAT LOOKS SWEET!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cool! I want to see even more airbox choices in the future. I tossed my Volant back on because of the soot that was getting sucked into the filter because of teh exhaust brake.

Can you buy just the hose ( 6" ) with the filter, with out the box? As for the noise, myself, I like hearing the turbo... ... ... and if I wanted it quieter I would reinstall the silencer ring and put a lid on my current AFE set-up.

Don

Don - I like hearing it too;) , but Nick told us that the screaming turbo actually has been a pretty big complaint. They sell alot of kits for the Dodge- as a matter of fact, it is their #1 selling part number.

As for the parts being sold seperately... . I will find out, but I think it is possible.

Kev

I put a TAG on my KSB1B and Scotty II, quieted it right down.

Interesting concept though, going back to the boxed filter concept.

I like the Scotty II idea of getting air from the cowl area. Outside air.

By the way, why wouldn't you want more turbo whine???

put a bigger turbo on there, and you'll figure it out :D

I love turbo whine, but it gets a little annoying on long trips sometimes. I'm fine on a 3-4hr trip, but when I go to Colorado, I may pop in the silencer ring. (I'll also probably bolt the resonator back on the exhaust! LOL!)

I like it. It draws air much like the scotty system (One intake from factory fender and the other from the cowl area that you get to provide the hole for. ) It's a clean looking airbox that gets comments. It comes with an afe type filter (Gotta check if it's official).
