Performed the first oil & filter change on my new truck today. Everything was fine till I started. On my 96 2 turns out gave a good stream of oil into the 14 qt. drain pan. (the type with a 3/4" hole into the storage section) I loosened the plug 2 turns and it was draining slowly. I thought it would drain quicker if I just removed the plug all the way. I was right. ! This caused a 3 stage oil drain. The 1st stage splashes hot oil in your hair and eyes. 2nd stage exceeds the drain rate capacity of the drain pan. The 3rd stage (overflowing the drain pan onto the concrete driveway) happens very quickly. My 1st thought was will I get this cleaned up before my wife gets home? All is well. I will try some of that new concrete cleaner tomorrow when she's at work. I will use my old method next time. I would also love to see the biceps of the factory guy who installed my oil filter. I had to turn it 2 complete turns with a strap wrench before you could turn it by hand. Live and learn. :D :D :D

LOL, Don!:D

I've had the same oil pan overflow thing happen. Now I just loosen the plug and let it drain slower until near the end. Then I remove the plug all the way. I know a bucket would be quicker, but my method is much cleaner, and it's easier to transport the waste oil in the sealed drain pan. And don't get me started on that first filter!

No Mess Oil Drain

Get the finger touch oil drain valve from Geno's. You can make it go as fast or slow as you want. Makes it easy to sample for oil analysis also.

Drain valve

Ditto the drain valve, I'm using a Fumoto drain valve. I can change the oil and not even get oil on my hands. :D

All is well. I will try some of that new concrete cleaner tomorrow when she's at work

after use get excess remove, put some wet newspaper down on the spot and let it sit over night. It cheap and works well.

I have been afraid those oil drain plugs could get knocked off and lose the oil. Do they stick out much from the pan?

I use a 2 gallon plastic pail under my truck. If you own a 4x2, that may be too tall, but I see your's is a 4x4, so this would also work for you. I also have the finger touch Geno's drain valve. Have had it since the first oil change, 20,000 odd miles ago. I took a very good suggestion from another TDR member and drilled a small hole in the handle of the drain valve and safety wire it so that it can't accidentally open and drain my oil all over the road.

It sticks down maybe 1" from the bottom of the pan. I don't do any serious off-roading with my truck, but I would think that if you do, it could be possible that some brush you drive over *might* sometime get caught on the valve.

You are not alone

First oil change for me, had purchased one of those two in one drain pan/oil containers from Wally World. Loosened the drain plug and let it dribble for a while, not long enough as I was soon to find out. Went ahead and removed the plug, Niagra falls. The itty bitty hole in the drain pan couldn't keep up with the flow, which proceeded to run over it's edges and onto the driveway. On the second oil change I used a bucket, worked like a charm. I feel your pain, Don.

Don,

To change the engine oil in the Cummins it helps to have an after-market drain device. Not that this is a big deal, (except in your case ;) ) it just make's the process quicker and easier. I use Geno’s Finger Touch Drain Valve, others prefer the EZ Drain and Tube.

For draining, I modified a joint compound bucket. I used a razor knife and “carefully” cut the top of the bucket just above the handle attachment points. Fits under great. Anything that will hold approximately 4 gallons to help prevent splashing when removing the bucket will do.

BIG BOB came up with the idea of modifying the drain valve to ensure complete draining. See his post under Geno's Finger Touch Oil Drain Plug for a link to his diagram.

I do some mild off-roading; cow pastures, creeks, and have not had a problem with anything coming in contact with the drain.

Tom, is this that safety wired drain valve :D

Does anybody use this plug from Genos. It is expensive but it looks like it would be fool proof and with the drain tupe you could slow down the oil flow by pinching the hose?

Drain Plug

MCampbell,

I have the EZ drain plug fro mGEno's and I love it.

When I was finishing the basement Iwas using lightweight drywall compound, blue lid, 4 /12 gal buckets. They fit under my truck when it was wearing 245 tires when the regular 5 gal bucket (green lid) wouldn't. Neither is a problem with 255/85s on it now.

Several folks have wondered about how much an aftermarket plugs sticks out of the pan. Does it matter if it is even 1 1/2" out?

COnsider this before you light me up. The oil pan is protected by the front axle tubes and the center section of the differential as well from any incoming objects you may brive over while off roading. The fron driveshaft also runs anlong side of the pan and provides some protection as well.

I did not say it wasn't an issue of concern to some. It's just not something I worry about. :)

Since I installed the Amsoil by-pass, my drain plug has not been removed except one time, and that was when I went to the 5W-30 Series 3000 HDD oil. Sure saves on the mess. NOw have over 134,000 on my Ram, and it runs better than when it was new.

i feel your pain

been there, but only twice. brought back memories and put a big grin on my face. once when i had a jeep i even forgot to remove the plug from drain pan/carrier! now i have the amsoil dual remote and haven't change oil since.

now to the important stuff... fireman dave---great pic below your name. where did everyone get those waving flags? is there a web site i can reference?

Been there...........

I'm so glad I wasn't the only one who's done that! I didn't have to clean any concrete, but still have big circle in the yard with "NO GRASS"

You would think at my age,,,,,,,,, I would have learned to do things more slowly. :D I do now.

Clean Up spilled Oil

There is a way to clean up oil that has spilled on concrete. I know - been there and done that. If you get a bag of cement you can sprinkle it or throw in on the oil - it will absorb it rather nicely then all you have to do is sweep into a pile and pick it up will a flat blade shovel. If you do it soon after you spill the oil it will take most of the stain out of the concrete. I have spilled oil in the garage and have applied the cement a second time and left it there for a day or two and then cleaned it up. After that a little "Simple Green" sprayed on and almost as good as before. :p

Bob,

Is it spring loaded in the closed position? Also, does oil drain from the side or from the bottom? It does look as if it is protected by the front diff/case pretty well. ;)
