First time for posting a question, long time reader. Just decided to buy 2004 (not 600) 2500 Quad 4x4, auto, laramie, short box, tow package, heated seats, all the good stuff. Found a beautiful bright silver truck on the lot. Window sticker $46,760. I have been reading all about "fair" prices for months on this fine forumn. Around 1 - 2 % below dealer invoice. Invoice around 12% below MSRP etc. Well when I got to talking with dealer the MSRP dropped to $43,780 (No real explanation just down almost $3,000). Showed me the invoice of $39,500, with $1,300. 00 as "hold back. " Here is his "deal:" $39,500 minus the $2,000 rebate (I was looking at the 0% finance) makes $37,500. He then said, "Now I have to add back in the dealer profit of $1,300!" Now I may have misread in past posts, but I thought the dealer got the "hold back" no matter what price the vehicle sold for. I suggested $37,000 + ($457. 00 license fees) for $37,457 "out the door. " He disagreed with my logic or understanding of "hold back" money. Am I all wrong? Doesn't Chrysler pay the rebate and "hold back" to dealer? Dealer's last offer was $39,500 with rebate already subtracted , but including license fees. (No sales tax in Alaska. ) I walked and that's the end of my buying from this dealer. The "big silver beauty" did have one interesting option: a Webasto installed. Anyone heard of a Webasto on a truck? I drive big tour buses with Webasto, but not pickups. Dealer didn't know the price of the Webasto? Sorry this is so long. Thanks for all the super advise and words of wisdom. Buying in Alaska can be frustrating. I really want to make the move to Dodge, but not at these prices. Shipping seems to be the problem, $950 - 1,000 from Seattle by barge. Flying down to lower 48 is also expensive!

Welcome to the board!!

Here is what I did. I called Dave Smith and priced out the truck I wanted. Nowing that the sell there trucks for around $330 invoice. My thinking is if I can buy a truck local for $1000 over invoice, it's worth it. I'm not really sure I can help on the hold back, but I would ask to see invoice, offer $1000 over, then subtract the rebates! So for the truck you looked at, 39,500 plus 1000= 40,500 minus the rebate of 2000 for a price of 38,500. I think you are correct and hold to your guns. However one other factor that isn't in the invoice price is that Webesto. That is probably close to $1500 install. Hope that helps!

I did the Dave Smith thing also. Went to the dealer with the Dave Smith Quote... they got within a grand of it and I bought the truck. The Webasto is a diesel engine preheater. Good thing. I didn't know the dealerships were offering them.

I got mine in Juneau for dealer + 500. Couldn't argue. The hassle for trying to get a truck for a little less from the outside wasn't worth the cost or my time.

The MSRP was $46700 on mine, and I ended up (before rebates) at close to $40000.

Good Luck

GVancil...

Congrats on your first post and upcoming new truck! That price you are getting your truck for seems pretty darn good to me. Granted I didn't do much research and comparisons before buying my truck (same setup as the one you are looking at), but the price you are getting in ALASKA is better than what I got here in Virginia. I paid $40K out the door, plus received stainless nerf bars, spray in liner, and trailer tow mirrors installed (had regular mirrors on the lot). By no means a great deal compared to what others are getting here on TDR, but at least I have a new truck!

It's been my experience that everything is more costly in Alaska -- except mosquito bites (plentiful and free), moose turds, and great smoked salmon! Man... I can smell the smoke shacks on the Kenai right now!!! MMMMmmmm... . MMmmm... .

A webasto is close to 1k before intallation, more if its a combo unit that heats the cab and is a coolant heater. Unless you are in the interior I don't think its necessary, but sure would be nice to come back from snowmachining (or whatever) to a warm cab and easy start.

Last weekend I saw a 2002 quad cab long bed 4x4, still under warranty, white, manual trans (5 or 6?) on the lot at Gene's Chrysler in FBX. Would be a cheaper option than a new one, looked perfect. I'd trade my 95 for it if I had a few thousand in cash laying around.

Oh, and if you need a new one driven up from outside just let me know when and where! If you buy diesel I'll buy the flight.

(like anyone is going to want their new CTD broken in by someone else on the al-can!?)

Thanks for all the replys. Had to drive to Glenallen today, major blizzard, so didn't get to talk with dealer again. Will try the Dave Smith route and see what happens. Thanks again for the replys. I am in Anchorage. The Webasto sounds like a good deal, better than remote start.

We gave the Alaska dealers the first shot at our business (it's only fair) and they couldn't come close. I brought a price from a dealer in Wisconsin in to them, told them if they can come within 1500 of this price they'll have a deal. They all told me to have a nice day. Long story short, ordered my pickup from Wisconsin, sticker price of 44,700... paid 36,600. Pretty happy with that deal. :D
