First, Second Generation Definitions

I have an opportunity to buy real cheap an early 90's Dodge one ton dual wheels, standard one seat cab, automatic transmission. Runs well, loose steering, brakes need work, drive it home.

I have not seen it, will do that in a few days. If I recall correctly the owner said it was a 93, and it was "better because it was the first year they put on an aftercooler"

I don't need a truck really, but love to restore things in general. My questions are, is this a desireable truck? What should I be looking for when I go view it next week? If restored to looking like new, what would be considered a fair value?

And most of all, I cannot find what it is that makes it a lst gen or a second gen truck!

1st gen's were made through 93 and were the boxy body style. 2nd gens were made from 94-2002 and are a drastically different body style.

89-91 were not intercooled, 3 spd auto or getrag 5 spd, 3. 07,3. 55,4. 10 were factory gear ratios, only auto trucks got the 307's.

91. 5-93 were intercooled, 518 auto OD nonlockup convertor or 5 spd getrag, 3. 55 and 4. 10 were the ratios almost all had from factory.

94-98 were intercooled, 47hr+ auto OD lockup convertor or NV4500 5 spd. P-pumps on the 12 valve engine.

98. 5-02 intercooled 47RE auto OD lockup, NV4500, V5600 trannies, and VP-44 injection pumps on 24 valve engine.

First gens were from 89-93, 94 to 2002 are second gens.

Value is strickly on the eye of the beholder. If you look in the classifieds here, some trucks are advertised for there 10 year old new list price. I picked up my 90 from a friend for $2500 and it is real rough body wise. A mint condition truck could get you $10,000 from the right guy I suppose.

Exactly What I Asked For

Thanks much, just what I was looking for. Got all the terms except for the "47hr" and "47RE", and is "518 auto" an Allison number or what. Do Dodges have a data plate somewhere so I don't have to crawl with the snakes to check axle ratios?

I guess another way, one could say if it has the "funny fenders" on the duals, it is a lst gen, huh?

Excuse Me!

Just be patient, I will get all the lingo down pat yet. My friend bought it for $575, drove it home, and it has sat there for 6-8 months, he wants to clean up his yard. Funny fenders, oops, "rare and collectible fenders" and all, still looks like it is worth driving home at that price. Sure wish it had a large cab on it though.

It can vary... when you're done drive it up and we'll talk. ;)

Good luck

Attraction Reasons

That is what has me so mesmerized by it. It starts right up without any need for starting fluid. Gosh that is nice.

At 575 dollars, I am prepared to give you a finder's fee! :D :D A fairly good finder's fee! :D :D Glen

Surprised

No answers! First time that has happened on this board, surely you guys are not stumped now.

ggsoldan: Up there where they run trucks into "around the world on a tank of fuel" airplanes eh? I lived in Topeka for many years.

727=3 speed auto, basically chrysler's bulletproof auto.

518=auto with overdrive, it is basically a 727 with an overdrive unit. Pretty good transmission with help in the overdrive area, and a tighter convertor

47RH=auto with overdrive, again basically a 727 with overdrive unit, these have lockup convertors, and are better built then the 518's. "H" stands for hydraulic controled.

47RE= basically the same as a 47RH except "E" stands for electronic controlled, yep it needs a computer to control it.

As far as gears go. 410 geared trucks if pretty stock run out of breath around 70-75 mph, pretty high revs, were as my 355 geared truck would run about 95 before it hits the governor. Thats how I tell anyway.

Does this help their Don? ;) Sorry to leave you confused. You better buy that truck for $600 and put it back into service one way or another.

"Funny fenders" or not, a first gen is the square bodied trucks, 94 was the first big change in the dodge body after 20 years.

I am no transmission specialist, but I think the 47s are newer than your first gen and the 518 is a reworked 727, equipped with overdrive. No guarantees there! If you look under the hood, there is a data sticker that gives the axle ratio, it is on the hood itself, on the driver's side, close to the front. Sometimes though, you cannot read them.

As far as flying around the world, there are some awfully big military cargo jets that fly out of Topeka and Salina. We lived close to the Salina runway when the military was moving huge quantites of equipment to the Middle East. One left every hour, the drone of the huge props and jet engines was the dominant noise in the county. It is pretty amazing to think they can drive several tanks into the belly of an airplane and get it off the ground! I thought the KC 135s fueled them in flight though. Glen

I never heard how your motor home turned out. Did you ever find the no start problem and get it fixed or did you just get rid of it?

Inquiring minds want to know. :-laf

Not an Option

Getting rid of it is not an option! I did get back from a trip today and found my brand new electronic hand held tach waiting for the next stage of diagnosing, was up looking at this lst Gen, poor thing needs a home I think. Give me some input guys, is the hood and such eary to come by? Tell me good and bad stuff about it!

She's pretty rough there Don. I hope you can get it for a song and a dance. It sure has a heck of a rear bumper. That outta make any tailgater shy away from the back of that truck. It looks to be an LE by the trim on the outside. Sheetmetal can be found, that hood should be able to come off any truck from 81 to 93. Fender for the bed might be kinda tricky.

Do us a favor, get it, fix it up nice, and put it back on the road.
