I think we may need a thread, (if one doesn't already exist), where folks can freely and openly compare the results of their oil analysis... for comparative purposes.

On the dino/synth thing... I plan on switching to amsoil before winter.

At -40, Dino 15w-40 flows like... well... a thing that doesn't flow very well. Northern Alberta sees an annual temperature swing of around 80 degrees celsius... (which is around 4000 fahrenheit... ish).

For me, synth is the way to go, I reckon. For those who are wise enough to live in more humane climes, dino will probably be just fine.

Just another report... ... .

HORIZON FLUID ANALYSIS REPORT

Sample #1 and #2 are from last year.

Sample #3 and #4 are from this past year. I guess I could go longer, but I think one year on the oil and filter is good enough, TBN is almost half what it started out at. I'll dump the oil/filter this weekend, but so far I am liking the extended drain intervals both from a time/money/resource perspective.

I keep meaning to put a bypass system on the truck, but wonder if that's cost effective? How much longer could I reasonably go?

I got rid of my K&N air filter for a AMSOIL one (>$50) maybe it's better, maybe no. My money, my truck. I run synthetic in 3 out or 4 vehicles, never had a motor failure on either oil in my life, some with high milage, but I feel better. I do hit redline often.

Another report

HORIZON FLUID ANALYSIS REPORT

Truck continues to run like a champ. Oil consumption is holding steady at about a 1 quart per 5000 miles, which I think is mostly weeping through various gaskets/seals. I do get a huff of blue on a cold winter start up, but nothing during the summer months or any other time. I'd still like to put a by-pass system on the truck, but there are other more important items I'd like to take care of first.

Sample 1 was a test at the 5K mark when I started this experiment.

Sample 2 was at the end of the run for that load of oil. I filled out the form wrong, but I did change the oil/filter at this point.

Sample 3 was at the 10k+/- mark after the change.

Sample 4 was at the end of the run. I changed oil/filter at that point.

Sample 5 is at the 10k+/- point on this change.

Anybody else have long term data to compare or input on this history?

So overall its been 43K miles or so and I think things look pretty consistent.
