The other day, I was at work putting together lockers that I had salvaged from a Masonic lodge. They must have been 70 years old. They had a certain patina that I love. But, after getting them assembled and cleaned, fellow crew members commented on the dings and bends; the warped tin and fading paint. But, I needed a locker and not only did they fill that bill, but they also appealed to me aestheticly. They had character. And it started me thinking... .

That night I lay in bed thinking about my life and how I approach it. I look for the uniqueness and value in decisions. I look for something on a basic level that I feel sets me apart from others. This is not to say I am better than others, or even worse. It just sets me apart and makes me unique.

So after sitting on the sidelines for about a year, perusing this site. I made the decision to buy. I drove all three iterations of the vehicle. I near about pulled the trigger on a 2001 dually and also a 91 reg. cab. But something kept holding me back. But then I stumbled across a brand new 2003 that the dealer needed to get off his lot and he offered me a price that was the lowest I had seen for that truck. But after driving it and thinking long and hard, it was missing something. It was new. It had no character. Retrospectively, this was the case with the newer dually also. They were too nice.

So, I kept to the sidelines and as was the case kept driving my wonderful girlfriend crazy looking at the want ads. On a lark, I drove up to look at a '93 dually that had been a "lot lizard" for a couple months. Something about the truck spoke to me.

It had over 200,000 miles; was dented and bruised. The carpet needed replacement and the seat was torn. But mechanically the vehicle was sound. Next thing I knew I was handing the owner a check for the truck. I finally had my Dodge. And with it comes the validation of my personality.

You see, after spending alot of time on this web site reading. I have come to the decision that all of us are a little "off" Whether old or young, we approach things differently. And we are happiest while doing it.

So forgive my long first post. Not only is it a comentary on me, but on each of you who have shared and enjoyed these vehicles, as I see it. I hoped that I can contribute to this forum as much as I have taken.

As they say, "keep the shiny side up".

Welcome to the TDR! I've owned a few of these older trucks; most have had over 150K, or crossed it shortly after I bought it. They all have had some things wrong with them, but they start, run, and dont guzzle fuel. I wont own anything else, unless my financial situation allows me sometime in the future to buy a 96 or so 12v 5 speed. You will find the $35 a year to be about the best retrurn on investment out there.

Welcome! Make sure and make youself a signature with your trucks and specs/bombs so we know what to say when you ask for advice.

Whatch out for that "dpuckett" kid, he's nothing but trouble. :D

I could not agree more! I owned a '99 CTD that was near new when I got it and it had no signs of any wear. It was a nice ride, but after having my '93 for a while now, I couldn't go back, despite all the little things that need attention. It has been a pleasure to own.

Welcome, you will never regret joining TDR and the ranks of these fine 1st gen. owners.

Welcome to the first gen crowd.

As I was reading, I thought you were going to say you bought a late model. Glad you 'dodged' that bullet.

You mentioned that you have been perusing the site for some time. No doubt you found kindred spirits in the posts. I suspect that anyone with a first gen is a bit eccentric/unique and there is an incredable amount of combined experience amongst us. To say nothing of a dose of tight wadness. I contend that even with a fair bit of maintnance and upgrades, the first gen is the lest expensive vehicle on the road.

You may have already found the answer to all the questions that your truck will bring up but should you get stumped, ask. Someone has already had that exact problem.

Welcome

Eccentric?! Unique?! Not us! Although them boys at school think I am crazy, all I talk about is my truck, Cummins, and the good ol TDR!

You won't regret that 35. 00, that's for sure. Welcome aboard.

Steve-a little bit crazy:p

I can't remember ever saying welcome to the TDR so much then latley. Sounds like the first genners are getting to be a larger group all the time!

Once again, welcome to the 1st gen group, and to the TDR as a whole, glad to have you aboard. Like said above, got questions just ask. Try to hold off the bombing bug, once you get it, I think its worse then sex or drugs, you gotta have more!:D

Hope you have good luck with your purchase, and may there be plenty of good miles ahead.

Michael

Welcome Flightmedic! Congratulations.

Sounds like you thought it out and finally made your choice. It is hard to stop shopping and looking when you have been on the search for so long.

I have been there and done that. I found myself grabbing the classifieds on Saturday morning breakfast and rushing to see whats new in the adds.

After I made my purchase I felt kinda empty. Saved my money and started going on little trips to check out the new toy and get to know her.

These trucks all have a personality. I hope you make friends with yours quickly and with little trouble.

Maybe start a little journal instead of grabbing the classifieds. Establish a base line and do some bonding.

Get all the fluids changed and if it is the infamous Getrag, overfill it about a quart.

I noticed that the price of Diesel is lagging behind gas in my area so maybe that is just another good reason to have one.

Better to get something comfortable with a bump or two rather than have a garage Queen and worry about those shopping carts every time the wind blows. HEHEHE.

Let the Fun Begin (Continue):D

Welcome Flightmedic! I scanned TDR in depth, and the Internet across the nation for six months before I decided on a 1st Gen. Yea, I like my truck. TDR is a valuable experience. Look for members in your local area, on line is fine, however, live and under the hood is a whole different story...

Patrick.

Welcome Aboard, Flightmedic!

Your post almost had me crying, but then, those phone company commercials do it to me every time. Plenty of big words in your message, I almost have them all looked up. You must have made an impression on Greenleaf, he was almost speechless!
