The other day, I was at work putting together lockers that I had salvaged from a Masonic lodge. They must have been 70 years old. They had a certain patina that I love. But, after getting them assembled and cleaned, fellow crew members commented on the dings and bends; the warped tin and fading paint. But, I needed a locker and not only did they fill that bill, but they also appealed to me aestheticly. They had character. And it started me thinking... .
That night I lay in bed thinking about my life and how I approach it. I look for the uniqueness and value in decisions. I look for something on a basic level that I feel sets me apart from others. This is not to say I am better than others, or even worse. It just sets me apart and makes me unique.
So after sitting on the sidelines for about a year, perusing this site. I made the decision to buy. I drove all three iterations of the vehicle. I near about pulled the trigger on a 2001 dually and also a 91 reg. cab. But something kept holding me back. But then I stumbled across a brand new 2003 that the dealer needed to get off his lot and he offered me a price that was the lowest I had seen for that truck. But after driving it and thinking long and hard, it was missing something. It was new. It had no character. Retrospectively, this was the case with the newer dually also. They were too nice.
So, I kept to the sidelines and as was the case kept driving my wonderful girlfriend crazy looking at the want ads. On a lark, I drove up to look at a '93 dually that had been a "lot lizard" for a couple months. Something about the truck spoke to me.
It had over 200,000 miles; was dented and bruised. The carpet needed replacement and the seat was torn. But mechanically the vehicle was sound. Next thing I knew I was handing the owner a check for the truck. I finally had my Dodge. And with it comes the validation of my personality.
You see, after spending alot of time on this web site reading. I have come to the decision that all of us are a little "off" Whether old or young, we approach things differently. And we are happiest while doing it.
So forgive my long first post. Not only is it a comentary on me, but on each of you who have shared and enjoyed these vehicles, as I see it. I hoped that I can contribute to this forum as much as I have taken.
As they say, "keep the shiny side up".
