I've sourced a good 5600 and was wondering if anyone had done the swap recently? Trans will be from an 04 I'm sure it will bolt up but any ideas if the splines are correct? Will I need the 04 drive shafts?

Gary Ames did one from five speed to G56 in a '97 dually a few months ago. He posted digital photos and good info.

Thanks Harvey.

Anyone have a DD clutch on a 5600? Did it seem to delay the shift noticeably? As soon as I put my DD in I was unhappy with the length of time between shifts of course that trans had some miles on it... ... .

Got my 5 speed and the wife's 6 speed measured up tonight.

5 speed:

25. 5 inches long

25. 5 " front drive shaft

01 6 speed:

31. 5" long

31. 5" long front drive shaft

Rear drive shafts are NA since mine is a two piece for the long bed and hers is a short bed one piece.

Donor transmission is from a 3500 so Ill try to get the drive shafts as well. Hopefully the u joints are the same!

Besides the driveshafts being different, more than likely the clutch plate splined hole is different also. Of course, there is no sense in changing the clutch disk without a new pressure plate and resurfacing the flywheel. Don't forget the bearings either.

The input shaft diameters will be different unless you use the very early 6 spd from a 2000 my. 1 1/4 vs 1 3/8 irrc

Thanks Harvey.

The DD's are heavier and a lil bit slower although I have a friend that is quick enough to shift twice while in the burn out box at the strip :-laf

That takes talent!

Well I called the seller and found out the truck the trans was from burned. The words "total loss" cooled my heels greatly. So after a very nice and lengthy conversation with doonie at blumenthals I've got a complete 5 spd reman coming. Very nice fellow and I can't wait for my new trans.

Now that the NV5600 is an "orphan" transmission (New Venture is gone), and cases are not available, the swap is less popular. Parts are readily available for the NV4500 five-speed. If you do decide to use a NV5600, have it checked out by Standard Transmission in Fort Worth, TX, or another experienced shop. The rear mainshaft bearing gets starved for oil and seizes. The outer race then spins in the case, damaging it, and often cracking it. Standard's Power Lube Package is well worth the cost, for it positively oils that bearing. See TDR Issues 64, p. 85; 67, p. 84; and 71, p. 101.

I already have the 1 3/8 main shaft in my 5 spd. But it is nice people are watching out for me.

Joe the more I thought about it the more I like the 5 spd, unless seriously overloaded. I don't go through three gears in a stop light and I like remembering where reverse is. If I need a six speed I can alway take the wife's!

I can't wait to get my new trans! In the meanwhile I'm doing some sound/heat proofing to trans tunnel to help cut down on noise.
