Some time back - maybe a couple of years now - guys were talking about a fix for operating the 5. 9 on steep grades so you don't pump out the oil..... I had that happen on a very steep short stretch - maybe a 100% grade - 45 degrees for 100 feet - when I backed down - in 4WD Low Range - the path looked like I had punched a hole in the oil pan = that much oil - well over a qurat..... what is the fix and how much does it cost???? HOW can this not be considered a design deficiency????? I know the hill I was on is very very steep - but i get the impression this can happen at grades significantly less .....

It was no cost to the customer when D/C performed TSB 09-002-02: http://dodgeram. info/tsb/2002/09-002-02.htm

On your own:

<TABLE class=light cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD class=dark align=middle>Part Number</TD><TD class=dark align=middle>Description</TD><TD class=dark align=middle>Bin</TD><TD class=dark align=middle>Qty</TD><TD class=dark align=middle>List</TD><TD class=dark align=middle>Sale</TD><TD class=dark align=middle>Order</TD></TR><TR><TD align=middle bgColor=#f3f3f3>5093017AA <INPUT type=hidden value=5093017AA name=part1></TD><TD align=middle bgColor=#f3f3f3>BREATHER <INPUT type=hidden value=BREATHER name=desc1> </TD><TD align=middle bgColor=#f3f3f3>SO</TD><TD align=middle bgColor=#f3f3f3>0</TD><TD align=middle bgColor=#f3f3f3>$ 309. 00</TD><TD align=middle bgColor=#f3f3f3>$ 262. 65 <INPUT type=hidden value=262. 65 name=price1></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>

Add 3. 2 hours labor and it looks pretty spendy.

Good luck!

I'm confused. The issue is going down a steep grade front first. You said you backed down. SNOKING

can i get tsb 09-002-02 if requested from my local dodge dealer on a 01 with 91,000 or is it back to my own responsibly

there was no place to turn around - had to back down... ... .....

Then on that hill it should not have dump oil out the breather. Sure you were on a steep down hill just before that? Was the front of the engine covered in oil?

Part of the game that is typically played by D/C is that the customer has to complain about having experienced the condition that the TSB addresses, rather than *requesting* the fix. Apparently D/C won't reimburse the dealer for correcting a design flaw prior to the consumer suffering the results of the design flaw.

My approach would be to:
  • Complain to service writer about losing two quarts of oil driving down the hill & the hours of cleanup needed to eliminate the resulting mess
  • Ask service writer if he/she has ever heard of this happening - is something wrong with the mighty Cummiins?
  • Express your concern about driving down the hill in the future
If this results in the service writer doing the deer-in-the-headlights facial thing—leave.

Return in a few days and let the same service writer know that you can help. Explain that after hours of research you found that TSB 09-002-02 addresses the exact situation you experienced driving down that hill. If the service writer can't come up with a copy of the TSB, you can help out again with a printout of the Dave Fritz version linked above.

Let us know what happens. Good luck!
