I think someone stated this before... but the viscous damper does seem to be the better alternative.

Apparently the downfalls to the elastomer style are:

Reliability: the rubber elastomer bands break down over time

Torsional Damping - Changes with Age (elastomer condition), temperature

Maybe the newest damper from Cummins would be the best way to go. From the new 6. 7L that will be laying down 800ftlbs. That would take care of alot of our needs. Who knows when those part numbers will hit the shelf. Looks like the OEM viscous could save some change... ~$316

I was able to pull the Mopar part numbers for the vibration damper for BOTH the 5. 9L and 6. 7L Cummins.

Old Elastomeric vibration damper for 5. 9 Cummins is Mopar part #5086735AA

New Viscous vibration damper for 6. 7 Cummins is Mopar part #68005166AA

All that being said, I have NOT been able to find a parts supplier that has BOTH dampers in stock and who could physically compare them and see if they are interchangeable or upgradeable. Maybe you guys can call around your favorite LARGE dealerships/supply houses and try to find someone to do so or even go down and take alook yourself and let us know what you find out. I am very interested in this thread because I will SOON be putting in an SBC Con-OFE clutch and replacing the DMF with their single piece flywheel, so I owuld like to find a way to install a viscous damper to help with NVH after the install. I am more then willing to use the Fluidampr, BUT if you go to the links that I quoted above, you wil see that the discount mopar prices are even LESS then the discounted Fluidampr price, substantially so if you can pick it up and avoid shipping charges from the discount supplier, so if it ios possible to use the oem viscous damper, then there is some money to be saved!!

Let's figure this out!!

PS--it seems that if someone could pull the oem cummins #, it might be more likely that a cummins supplier would have BOTH in stock. Don't know for sure if it IS a cummins part, BUT it is something else to look into.

Nice Job seafish

Found a Mopar parts source online listing the 6. 7 damper for $270 DodgePartsMopar.com

There has to be a Cummins PN for the damper, anyone have a way to look it up?

Per discussion on Comp Diesel the 6. 7 damper will fit 5. 9s except for a little interference with the fan pulley. Shaving about . 08" off the shoulder of the damper will solve that, or finesse the fan pulley to shift its position a little.

THANKS !!! That is very good price, and very good info on fitment if it is accurate... Is there a link to a thread on Comp Diesel that you can post ??

Vaughn, that's a good link... thanks.

I DON'T quite understand though if one HAS to change the fan pulley from a 5. 9 to a 6. 7 style and then the 6. 7 damper will fit on a 5. 9 motor, or can one ONLY use the 6. 7 damper and mill . 080" from the diameter ??

Is one method preferred over the other ??

HAve you done this mod yet, are you planning on doing it ??

Someone please provide an Engine Serial Number for a 6. 7 and I will check out the damper part number and price from Cummins in the morning. Will also compare part numbers for fan pulley between the 5. 9 and the 6. 7.

Mike. :)

That'd be great... if someone does not post in this thread, maybe I'll put up the request in the 6. 7L engine forum !!!

I wasn't 100% clear on that myself either. . . would rather not mess with changing out the fan pulley because that just adds more cost to the project and in the end you wouldn't save much over just getting the Fluidampr (which someone posted previously you can supposedly get for $375 from Xtreme Diesel)

Vaughn,

I did a request in the 3rd gen 6. 7L forum as well.

Hopefully we will get one from someone today.

Mike. :)

OK got some Cummins part numbers here guys with prices from Cummins Northwest:

Crank damper 4933224 $222. 82 (4 in stock at factory at the moment)

Mounting bolts 4937228 $1. 23ea (need 4 but should be able to reuse originals)

Adapter 4937760 $18. 12 (not sure what this is or if it's needed)

Dowel pin 3946495 $1. 53 (evidently Cummins uses a dowel for better vibration transmission to the damper, just guessing)

Vaughn,

Did CNW use an engine serial number??? That set-up looks like it is for a rear geartrain 6. 7L engine, that adapter is for barring the engine over I believe.

Damper may well be the same number regardless.

I have a promise of a serial number today so I can check this out.

Drawing of CNW parts list... .....

That's interesting Mike, the SN I used was 58004251 off an '11 truck and the parts guy at CNW said it was the Ram application built Nov 2010 as I recall.

That is the correct part, just double checked it.

Maybe they (Cummins) figure that is a simpler way to bar them over now, no matter which gear train they have.

Might not be a bad idea, could be that the flywheel tool is not easy to get into place anymore with all the extra stuff on the right hand side of the engine.

Will play around with the ESN that you provided and check the fan pulley and other trinkets against a 5. 9L tonight when I get home.

Mike. :)

Couldn't wait, too curious. :-laf

Fan pulley (Item # 4) is a different number, factory has 62 of them. I am waiting for pricing on that, will have it later today or first thing in the morning. All the rest is the same such as idler pulley, fan bracket, etc. using my '06 ESN for comparison.

4930580 fan pulley should be used with the 4933224 crank damper.

Illustration below, item 4 is different, all other parts shown are the same for both the third gen 5. 9 or the 6. 7.

mwilson, and everyone, thanks for pushing through with this...

I am very curious as to how this pans out... perhaps the fan pulley is a smaller diameter and the damper is larger, so it all still fits ??
