I've searched, and found that on the 99 year model, to make the fog lights stay on with the high beams, per the dodgeram.org website all you do is:

Remove the fog lamp relay and install a jumper between pins #3 and #5.

Which pin is 3 & 5? Is it 30 & 87? Basically defeating the relay, and making it "closed" all the time?

Thanks

Craig

I believe 30 & 87 would be the pins - most automotive 'ISO' relays have a schematic of the pinout on the top of the case. You want the pins NOT connected to the coil symbol. Now I'll preach: be aware foglights on with high-beams is not strictly legal by motor vehicle and could get you cited or inspection-failed in some jurisdictions. Perhaps some of our members in blue can verify this for you. I get flashed enough with my fogs always on with low beams (so people will know they ARE low beams)!

Could be a problem...

True... And that COULD be a problem for me. Im used to driving with my bright lights on and I've NEVER been flashed for bright lighting somoene. BUT... since I have all the items together now, and plan on doing the sport light conversion later today, I will have to start remembering to be sure to dim the lights for approaching traffic... I'll see how it works. We dont have state inspections anymore. Leos can do an inspection if they pull you over, but generally dont.

Thanks for the input.

Craig

Did it

On the 99 (year specific according to dodgeram.org), if you pull the relay, the relay pins that need to be jumped are marked... get this... . 3 & 5. Not the 87 87a 30 etc. I jumped the sockets that are for 3 & 5 and viola!! Fog lights stay on.

Thanks

Craig

OK you say "they stay on all the time". Does that mean "if" you have the switch pulled out to "turn" them on? Then they stay on regardless of low or hi beam. They will still go on/off with the stock light switch - yes?

I'm hoping I understand this correctly because I'd like to give it a try. One more question - does doing this put more heat to the stock headlamp switch?

Yes

Exactly... They work just like normal with the on/off switch. Only difference is when you pull the high beams, they stay on.

Remember some years are different and different pins are jumped or relayed to do it. You can find the info below for the different year models.

Hope that all helps!

So, Craig , you're one of the people that don't care wether they blind the on coming driver or not. You seem like the type that "if I can see to heck with the other guy"

Now, if you don't wire them in via another relay you're going to smoke you light switch. Not all at once but a few months down the road. I pull a 45' flat bed and had to wire the trailer brake thru a relay after smoking one switch. Don't move to Va with it like that ,you'll fail inspection.

Okay?

First... I dont really get the attitude. You dont know me, and I dont know you nor do I care to. So how do you know what "type" of guy I am.

Second... I do care if I blind oncoming drivers.

The purpose of fog lights is to illuminate down low to the ground, and off to the sides. Not up in the face of oncoming drivers. Now... Since before I did the sport headlight modification (bet you didnt know that... . of course not, you dont have all your facts) the draw through the headlight switch is only to activate the relays and power the fog lights. So the power draw is reduced significantly... How much?? Lets do a little bit of math.

896 fog bulb 37. 5 watts 2. 9 x 2 = 5. 8 amps

9004 HL bulb low 45 watts 3. 5 x 2 = 7. 0 amps

high 65 watts 5. 0 x 2 = 10. 0 amps

bosch relay . 16 amps

The fog lamps draw 2. 9 amps each or 5. 8 for both. Since there is no high or low beam on the fogs, they draw 5. 8 when they're on... PERIOD. The headlights on low draw 3. 5 amps each or 7 amps. On high they draw 5 amps each or 10 amps. Each relay draws 0. 16 amps. So, here's whats going through the switch without the headlight conversion.

LOW Beam with fogs: 12. 8 amps

HIGH Beam w/out fogs: 10 amps

HIGH Beam with fogs: 15. 8 amps

WITH SPORT HEADLIGHT CONVERSION. (one relay each side working)

LOW Beam with fogs: 6. 12 amps

HIGH Beam w/out fogs: 0. 32 amps

HIGH BEAM with fogs: 6. 12 amps

SO... As you can see, the amperage draw is reduced significantly with my truck and my headlight switch will be fine. Next time, please take the time to gather your facts before sticking your foot in your mouth. As far as inspection goes, we dont have those anymore so I dont have to worry about it. And don't worry, I wont be moving to VA. I hear there are quite a few of these around there.

Hundreds if not thousands of TDR guys and BOMBers have been making this simple always-on foglight modification for 10 years now, to date no episodes of mass headlight switch failure have been reported. . .

I did this mod probably 7 or 8 years ago - probably almost 100,000 miles ago. When my headlights come on, I switch my fogs on too - much better light that way. The fogs stay on with the brights, and I can dim the brights anytime. Never had a hint of trouble with the switch.
