This thread contains an interesting observation by a poster who admits to a "life long history" with Ford. The thread involves an owner who experienced engine failure described by Ford techs as resulting from increased temperatures due to increased power.

This part of the thread contains the observation that the engine is not "robust":

Oh yeah. I was following that since the beginning. The guy had the truck for like 2-3 weeks and it developed a knock. He drove it into the dealer with the edge box on and they denied the warranty claim and left him with the bill.

After a couple hours I finally made it to the end of that thread. It seems that this has not been the only 6. 0 PSD owner who has experienced engine failure, some with chips some plain stock.

To be fair, he chipped it the same day he got it from the dealer, and within the same week, towed a heavy load up a hill presumably using one of the more agressive settings. No break in. Then he takes the truck to the dealer with the box for all the world to see. An excellent list of just about everything you shouldn't do after you get your new truck.

What I found interesting was some observations that this engine may be close to the peak of its potential as it leaves the factory, with not a lot of strength in reserve for hopup.

Once again, to be fair, having perused the 3rd gen Cummins forum it is very plain that the Cummins, and presumably the PSD and DM, all have small turbo exhaust housings, and chipping these engines without changing the turbos for ones with larger exhaust housings is a recipe for excessive temperatures that can burn valves and damage pistons (what happened to this Ford owner).

I found it quite remarkable that in the hundreds of posts discussing the failure of this guy's engine, no one mentioned the possibility that an upgraded turbo with a larger housing might be needed to keep combustion temperatures under control.

The level of expertise at the TDR and this forum is a good reason all by itself to own a Cummins Dodge. I haven't found anything close on the Ford and Chevy forums.

Does the edge boxes viod the 100,000 mile warranty ? Just curious i was at a local dodge dealer a couple of weekends ago and i noticed they were seling Edge boxs in the parts department. Also a wile ago when the PSD 6. 0 came out i read some were that they were haveing problems . I think the injectors were leeking fuel into the engine oil and causing bearing falure , oops

Hey, anyone happen to notice the signature of "Dualie". He's got a 94 7. 3 with 203K on the clock and is on his SIXTEENTH transmission. That's a little over 12. 5K per transmission..... and everyone says dodoge trannies stink!!!!

The 6. 0 PowerStroke has a VGT. (Variable Geometry Turbo) No need to upgrade the Exhaust Housing, bnut you mihgt need to put a bigger compressor wheel in it to get more air in the motor. Maybe a Cam would help out?

Any truck putting out more than 40-60HP over stock, and is used for towing, should really have an Exhaust Temp gauge.

Taking your truck to the dealer with the chip on the truck? I wouldn't want to take my truck to the dealer with the chip on it, just for fear of somebody not knowing how to use it, and screwing it up.

My $. 02

I think you are right Big Daddy.

The Cummins uses an adjustable/slidable nozzle to change the exhaust housing size, where, the International uses vanes to change how the exhaust flows into the exhaust wheel ?

I have always liked Fords, but the more I read over there the more glad I am I have a Dodge.

Although my 99 Superduty was a great truck but it was the 7. 3.

I love it how the thread has turned into "he must be a troll". Anytime there's a problem posted they end up saying it was a troll. Deluded individuals over there.
