Duramax showing off-- I was impressed

Is this anyone we know or on this board?

Part of my work fleet: 1998 FORD!, F-series dumper, 5. 9 Cummins with Allison, Cummins engine CPL1550. No start with good cranking. I push up on the shut off solenoid, starts/runs fine. Replaced solenoid assembly with new Cummins#3800675- same problem- turning ignition key on ,does not pull up pump lever. Disconnected rod on solenoid, same problem- will not pull up but will hold in the up run position if pushed manually. Checked fuses, all ok, checked wiring, 3 wires to solenoid harness-black-ground ok, red outer-12 volts ok, center wire- red GROUND- should grounded? Is this a pull in or a hold in wire?I do not have a wiring diagram, any help would be appreciated, did I overlook something?Sorry for the long post... Rick.

no start

There should be a relay that sends the current to the fuel solenoid, not sure were it's at on the ford butI'll bet thats the problem it should get the signal from a wire on the starter also. Hope this helps a little. Tim

Rick,

Ramman is right. It's probably a relay. The pull on circuit has too much current to go directly to the ignition switch. The red wire where you see ground may be the pull on wire. There will little resistance thru the pull on coil to ground. It should be a heavier wire than the red one with 12 volts. I assume that you made the measurements with the key on. You can test it by pulling the connector apart and testing the side of the connector that goes to the solenoid. Use at least #10 wire for tests. Apply a ground to the terminal with the black wire. Now if the larger red wire is the pull on, if you apply 12 volts to that the solenoid should lift. If that happens then track down the relay. On ours there is a fuse link from the battery that goes belly up once in a while and does this. It goes to the relay.

Thanks for the replies, today I checked wiring on a 95 Ford trash hauler with a similar cummins driveline, here's what I found. Center red blue wire is attached to the starter solenoid terminal, picks up power when key is in the crank mode, energizes solenoid, pulls in and the run circuit holds the solenoid "up". THE PROBLEM- open wire to starter solenoid, VERY difficult to get to harness, runs from the starter up to the rear of the engine, I will continue digging next week, no relays found anywhere. Thanks Again, Rick.

Why not run a new wire direct from the starter solenoid to the PULL coil on the pump. once thestarter is engaged, the pull coil will pull and when you let off of the key to run position, the hold coil will keep the pump open. Chris

Anyone check the fuses yet? There will be a relay somwhere, but if you can't find i, just rewire thw whole thing. You'll at least have peace of mind then! :D

Ford/Cummins No Start

Thanks for the ideas, fuses all ok, no relays found, rewired with taking harness apart, wiring a victim of winter rock salt, corroded thru. Truck reassembled, back in service... ... ... . Rick.
