The 6. 0-liter Power Stroke engine has been troublesome from the day it was launched in the fall of 2002. It replaced a somewhat unrefined 7. 3-liter diesel.

The powertrain was built by a longtime Ford diesel supplier, International Truck and Engine Corp. , of Melrose Park, Ill.

For this version of the engine, International Truck designed a unique high-pressure fuel-injection system.

Most automakers use only electronic controls to operate the fuel injectors in a common-rail system. But the Power Stroke's fuel injectors are operated by a high-pressure oil pump as well as electronics.

According to several of the 150-plus complaints posted on the Web site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some trucks never even made it home from the dealership before the fuel injectors or turbocharger failed.

The engine also has been plagued with leaky fuel injectors, oil leaks, broken turbochargers, wiring harness troubles, faulty sensors, defective exhaust gas recirculating valves and bad computers.

Since the engine debuted three years ago, Ford has issued at least 77 technical service bulletins. That is far above average, even for a new engine. These bulletins tell mechanics how to diagnose and fix various problems.

By comparison, there have been eight service bulletins for GM's Duramax diesel V-8 and none for the diesel engine in the Dodge Ram truck. Both engines debuted at about the same time as the Power Stroke.

Not starting anything, but where did that fellow go who was praising the Duramax all last week... ... ?

After reading the entire article, I felt you left out some important information, so here it is.

One more chance

As for the Schraders, three days before they were to appear before a Lemon Law arbitration panel in November, Ford offered to buy back their old truck, waive mileage costs and put them in a 2006 model.

After consulting with a lawyer, the Schraders took the deal. The couple left Michigan a few days later for a road trip West. But they are still angry with Ford because they had to spend a year trying to get their truck fixed.

And they will not cut the new truck any slack. If the new truck so much as sputters, James Schrader says he will pull into the nearest Dodge dealership and trade it for a Ram.

If it were me, I would have had a roll back there to pick up the truck and deliver it to the nearest Dodge dealership. I would have not so much as farted in the drivers seat before trading it off.

Uh, hate to break it to the writers of that article, and to my fellow Rammers, but there have been SEVERAL TSBs issued for our engines - from alternator brackets, to high idle, to white smoke on startup. So, that is an inaccurate statistic.

Thanks, I enjoyed that thoroughly! I'm not one to bash ANYONES equipment. To each his own, but I have never been able to figure out why anyone would buy a powerstroke in the first place. I have nothing against the the truck, just that sickly sounding V8. Yes , I've driven them, yes, I have friends that own them. As far as I'm concerned Ford lost their powerhouse with the end of the 460.

i got my truck because i needed a truck and it was there at the time now its for sale and i am looking for a cummins the stroker aint bad i just want a simplier engine and a 5spd

I would like to see someone post that over at TDS and see how long it is before the Nazi mods delete it. :-laf Every such article that I have seen similar to this one is not allowed to be posted on TDS. . Makes you wonder just how much truth is actually over there if the freedom to post a relevant article isn't recognized. . Anyways, I bet the Schrader's already own a Dodge. :-laf Any lawyer that advises someone to get a 6. 0 Ford should be disbarred. :-laf

yea, it wouldnt last very long over there :-laf

im happy with my powerstroke, just because im a huge ford fan... . someday when i get outa high school, ill get a ford with a cummins Oo. :D

Can anyone tell me how to find TSB on my 04 CDT?

It would be appreciated.

yea really, the core buyer for our salvage yard has a late ford dually and it sounded like something large and breakable had fallen over when it started up outside my shop, nothing that makes that ugly a sound can last long

I was doing a delivery in my 7. 3 ford(company) and a guy comes ripping up next to me and parks,i notice it a ford 6. 0,nice truck, looks are deceiving, anyway continue to get back to work, come back to my truck(10 min later) and notice the same guy coming out to his Ford,he fires it up,LOTS and LOTS of blue smoke on start up and contiues to blow blue smoke for about 15-20 seconds until he steps on it to leave and then it turns to a bluish grey haze  . It was actually warm out too,+12C. To me it just doesn't seem right, but i could be wrong,is that normal with the 6. 0?

We have an '03 at work that actually hasn't been too bad. It's only been back to the dealer about 4 times... . :D

just that sickly sounding V8

I tell the guy that drives it when he pulls in it sounds like someone rolled a coffee can full of marbles into the driveway. :-laf

.

This hits home.

A freind of mine was just telling me that he is looking to buy a full sized diesel PU truck and is leaning towards Ford cause that's what ALL the serious haulers operate.

I'll allow him to learn this lesson the hard way.

I used to work for an oil field/oil well service company in the days prior to the 7. 3L Turbo and up untill 1998. They buy ALL Ford Diesels. We had very limited problems with the old 7. 3L non turbo units. They had no power, but they are reliable providing the glow plugs worked :-laf The powerstroke (in 1994) changed all that
