Real Diesels.....

Duramax Safe Mode?

Any of You guys watch F-1 racing? How about 840 HP from a 3. 0 Liter V-10 at 19,000 RPM? I was at the F-1 race at Indy last Sept. You can hear that wail for miles! That's the Sound of Power TOO!

Somehow, I think we agree Dr. Evil. I drove long distance (Atlanta to LA) for a few years. Started in a Cabover IH. Then a Freightliner cabover. Then a Peterbilt conventional. Thought I had died and gone to heaven. The ride was good and dependable. And it looked good. All three ran Cummins engines and parts and service were available everywhere. Glad you like PSDs. Where I live with the service departments around here, that's why I switched to Dodge. And my truck works. It's not the fastest in the drag races and it won't outrun a Ford or Chevy top end, but when it's time to work, I wouldn't trade with either of those. My 98 was the same way. The main reason I like it is because it is a big inline six. When I open the hood, I'm always impressed with the simplicity of the whole thing. There are things I like about Ford, but the way they crank when it's cold or mpg and the complicated mass I see when the hood comes up are some things I don't like. I'll stay with the Ram.

Ford does sell a lot of commercial vehicles, part of the reason is that it is a heavier duty truck. The GVW is 1K over the Dodge in a 4X2... the most common ordered and 500lbs over on the 4X4. This is for the F350's. Not to mention they sell a 450/550 which equates in the sales figures. They also offer an F350 version with straight frame rails over the rear end for all the wreckers we see running around. There is no doubt that all of these configurations help with the sales figures. Opening the local Truck Trader shows a ton of both Ford and Dodge diesels for sale. Who knows why people sell. Dodge guys may want 4 doors and Ford guys may awant the Cummins. A lot of dealers here locally don't carry much of the other brands trucks on the used lots. They either swap with other dealers or put them on their own lots. There are several large chains here which have both Ford and Dodge lots. If you trade in a Dodge at the Ford lot they just send it to their Dodge dealership owned by the same group and vice/versa. I really don't see much of the other brands on a single dealerships lot. The Ford house usually has a bunch of Fords and the Dodge lot has the Dodge's. What we have seen at almost every RV park we have been to is a lot more PSD's than Cummins trucks. My son goes around and makes a count every time at some point in the stay. The folks towing RV's just may have to have 4 doors. I am in the construction business and see a lot more PSD ruuning around. They do sell more, and this is Texas. There are so many trucks/Suv's running around here is is almost funny. I like the Cummins for the mpg and PSD for the room.

Mopar Muscle,

My oil leak was fixed today... they had to replace some kind of seal around the rear of the camshaft. They called to say it was ready at 3 then called back at 3:30 and found another problem. Evidently some type of spring behind the steering wheel broke while backing the truck out of the shop. It has something to do with the airbag. I have been told the airbag light is on and both the cruise control and the steering wheel mounted radio controls are not working as well. They say they know how to fix it... it is a common problem and it will be ready by noon tomorrow. Has anyone heard or had this problem. I am starting to feel like I have a problem truck!!... CJ

Dr. Evil, F1's 840 HP comes out to around 232 ft/lbs of torque @19000rpm. So this is why these don't come with trailer hitches? Oh well, they still go like stink.
