Howdy yall

I'm looking at trading my 93 W350 for a 90 Ford F350 with a CTD in it. It's a 96 model motor,NV4500 trans, believe it even has the Dodge t-case in it(NP241???) It has a #11 plate,K&N mounted on turbo 100HP injectors, pump tweaked, timing advanced,3" pipe with 5" diesel stacks. The trans has a Centerforce 12" clutch he said in it,doesn't slip or anything. The motor,trans,t-case have approx 90k on them, came out of a wrecked Dodge. I want a reg. cab truck,I got a flatbed that I can't use(strapping down all the small things I carry gets OLD) and I want a stick, not a auto like I got. Could yall tell me somethings about these motors/trans? Everybody said they got a p-pump on them, are these the inline pumps? Are they a good long lasting pump? What would you suggest to do to the motor? He said it'll boogie, but its got 4. 10s in the rearend so you know its not a rocket. Anything yall would help me out on,things I need to know, things I might want to know, things I need to learn etc etc about these 94-98 12valves would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot yall

The 96 motor is a godd year, and it does have an inline P-pump. It should have a good get up and go with the 410 rear. The top end will suffer though. There isn't 100 HP injectors for the 96 motor, the marine 370 injectors will give about 40-60 HP. You don't say what turbo this motor has, the stock turbo is the Holset HX-35 with the 12cm exhaust housing. Check out the quality of the installation at the motor mounts and trans mount, check a stock truck so you know what to look for, you want to be sure they are good and solid mounts. You will want to junk the 3" exhaust in the furture if you want and increase in HP. As for the motor first I would want to find out what injectors are in the motor and then get a turbo to match the air flow to the fuel available, or possibly change injectors to marine 370's. A governor kit 3,000 or 4,000 will make a big difference in the truck and make it a lot more driveable. Once you know more about what you have and what you want we can be of more help.

Doing one of these now, I'd check what bruce said, and add:

- check the cooling system. Is the fan shroud done right, tight fitting, and does it have enough radiator to cool properly.

- Check the brake system. Did they use hydraboost, or the vacuum setup? If vacuum, how does it feel, especially after several uses and at idel.

- check the speedo. If using the np241hd, I'm interested in how they put a cable in there, since dodge is electronic and I think ford was still a cable that year (not sure on that). I'm using the 241hd in my 1978 Crew 4x4, and will have to solve this one.

- how is the wiring? shutdown soelenoid, temp sensors, oil pressure.

- are the soelenoids operational for the heater grids?

- check ac and alternator brackets if they were fabbed.

Probably way more, but I'm still learning. Be sure and check the mounts for the engine and transmission, they were all fabricated (or perhaps built by a guy in Billings who does a bunch of ford repowers 1980 and newer).

Also check the fuel feed line and the return line. Someone in the conversions topic mentioned that if the return is too high, it will foam your tank a bit. If the feed line is not the right diameter, you might have fueling issues at wot - gassers seemed to use a smaller diameter.

Sweeeeeet - Yes the 96 5. 9 will have the inline P7100 pump and yes they last a long time as long as you take care of it (clean fuel). I don't think that you have a 241 TCase - The output is on the wrong side (passenger side ) for a stock Ford front end which is on the drivers side. It might be a 205 from a 1st gen Dodge.

Here is the HP specs for that year of Dodge Ram if you want to see where it started out as:

215 bhp @ 2600 rpm - 49 state manual

180 bhp @ 2500 rpm - all auto. trans

180 bhp @ 2500 rpm - CA man. trans

A number 11 plate with stock injectors would put you around 280 HP. Not sure where it would be with the extra 100hp injectors you listed.

The trans (NV4500) is good but like everything the weak part is the 5th gear nut which the Cummins likes to loosen. Might ask them if the extra nut was put on the main shaft or replaced with a splined shaft or other repair was done to keep it from working loose.

Also - There is a dowel pin between the timing gear case and the block that can work loose and drop into the engine causing from no trouble to major damage. Do a search on KDP (Killer Dowel Pin). I tabbed mine (was backed out 3/16") and found a few of the internal bolts loose.

Another weak point is the starter contacts which have a tendency to stick. This is easly correctable with a heavy duty set available off EBay, Foster Truck or local alternator/starter rebuild shop.

Definately check out the wiring and make sure that the Water In Fuel sensor (WIF), Fuel Heater (Located on the lift pump) and Grid Heaters are hooked up and working.

So now the $64 question - Is it Intercooled and if so what kind Ford/Dodge? I sure hope so with a 11 plate and injectors? How about guages - Are they installed?

Actually, the T-case output is on the driver side on that year model ford. I don't think the ford ever put it on the passenger side like dodge did. I know a guy with a 1977 F-250 and the T-case out put is still on the driver side. The truck sounds really cool. You're lucky to find something like that. Have fun!!
