2018 Big Horn Forum?

1st Gen 4x4 Winter Beater

There is a fairgrounds 2 miles from my place. Same thing happens there, horse show comes in and the lots are full of class 8's pulling 4 horse slants. Unbelievable the money these guys have wrapped up in those units.

Not really so unbelievable when you figure the cost that the livestock inside those trailers cost twice as much as the entire rig cost

I have to admit I am glad to see they went clean sheet on this, and went back to pushrods. I owned a 5.4, and had tons of trouble with it. My Dad had a Mercury with a 4.6, and it couldn't hold a candle to the 302 it replaced in performance or MPG. My Dad's buddy was a muckity-muck for Henkles & McCoy, and racked up 50-60K miles per year, and the mod motors started using oil heavily loooong before the 302s and 351s did. I am not a fan of their "Romeo" engines, if they still call them that.

Hopefully, the new Ford gasser
Im interested in the Ford GASSER Its a CRIMNE that Cummins choose to put their fine motor in such a POS truck like DOG-GE has become, Cummins was the ONLY reason I bought the truck
Yep, we bought a Cummins, and they gave us a dodge wrapper! Could always buy a newer Ford/GM body. Ford would be a Fummins, and Chevy-Chummins? Kids around here have been doing that as I am sure others elsewhere, have as well. One recent one was a suburban, another was actually a Dodge Ramcharger.

Well, Dodge may have more than their fair share of issues, BUT I ended up in a Dodge because of of endless string of absolute garbage from Ford and GM, so the grass is always greener. Believe me, it took extreme problems and poor treatment to undo my misplaced loyalty to Ford, but it's 19 years since I bought one, and it'll be 19 more...

I bled Ford blue for many years....until the blood ran out after the 5.4 engines. My motorhome is 460 powered. I specifically stayed away from the v-10 because of my experiences with the 5.4's...….and the 460 was a Jasper engine at 500 miles. I looked at many Fords before I bought this last dodge, the better deal, was the Cummins. I am still not sold on aluminum in the rust belt. My last Ford buy was the ranger in 2009.

I have a thread on TDR here somewhere about the ongoing oil consumption issues I have had with the DOHC 4.7L V8 in our 2010 Ram. Interesting to see that it was happening in the Ford modular engines also.

Don’t forget the F650 which I think has a V10 now.

Good point. Ford has been pushing that V10 in the medium duty segment a lot recently. And, I have to admit, I've been seeing more and more gas powered units in that class on the road lately.

When I first got in to the fire service in the late '80's-early '90's, the company I was with had 2 matching C series tankers (I believe that they were C70's but I can't remember for sure). They were gas 427's with 5 speeds and 2 speed rears. I can remember times running the pumps on those trucks and having the exhaust manifolds just glowing red from the heat.

Things have certainly come a long way, but I just find it almost nostalgic that we will be seeing big block gassers back at work in some of those applications.

I wonder how long it will take for that to be a crate engine. One of those in a 70's Ford 4 door 4x4 would be pretty sweet.

I remember the thread, and my 4.7 in the wife's Jeep is horrible. It just used a quart in a 250 mile highway trip. That thing isn't going out of town anymore.

As for the 5.4's, my brother has owned two of them and never had an issue with oil consumption at all. Never a mechanical problem either. Maybe they weren't built on a Friday afternoon? Who knows.

I just couldn’t believe the spark plug issue with the 5.4’s. I hope this engine is a good one. I’m curious to see what the rebuttals will be? A monster Hemi? I already know GM can make a LS as big as they want.

Im sure there are bad experiences with every engine but the 4.6 has proven itself as well as any light duty small block gasser IMO. They have been around in the Crown Vic and Grand Marquis since 92 and im pretty sure the Town Car before that. They survived a lot of hard years in police and taxi service. I'm pretty sure our local PD only keeps their cars until they hit somewhere around 130k miles - I cant imagine how many hours that translates to. Then they go to auction to start another life - usually in fleet trim again. I've got a 2 valve and a 3 valve in my fleet and the 3 valve is definitely the stronger of the two. Granted its only just cleared 150k miles but it's been a solid engine to date.

I think the key to the spark plug issue is to change them early and use Champion plugs (that don't break) instead of the Motorcraft plugs. If you actually wait until the 100k recommended plug change...good luck. I didn't have any issues on a 3V 5.4 with ~50k on it.

With the way the Big 3 are going at each other, it wouldn't be far fetched to see a big block V8 pumping in excess of 500 hp at some point soon from one of these guys.

Man, I remember when 200 HP was a big deal.

I'd bet you dollars to doughnuts that the rings are shot on the #8 and possibly #6 hole on that thing. My consumption has been much better since the rebuild, but it still uses a lot. Luckily, at the rate the rest of the truck is falling apart, I will not have to do it again.

At 160k the Jeep is not worth messing with. It's been the worst vehicle I've ever owned and it needs to go away. Five window regulators, at least five PS pumps, 3 water pumps, transmission @ 120k, all AC lines, multiple blend door failures, crank and cam position sensors...I'm done with it.

Just read the article on the GM HD's. 910 ft/lb tq and 35500# towing.

I could care less about drag racing but I'd bet someone a steak dinner it will run circles around the new 1000 lb ft engine. Gearing plays a bigger role in getting the load moving than hp and torque ratings, but then again it's just not as flashy.

But I will say im glad Ram dropped the stupid mandatory 3.42 gears in anything other than a DRW.
Talk about a multi year brain fart!
