Comments on the RACOR LFS-802 / Oil Guard EPS-60 bypass filter?

I went to Advance Auto Parts today to pick up my Fram Air Hog (P/N PPA9589) and installed it immediately. I gotta say, I was hoping to hear a difference..... When I installed the K&N in my 97 Gasser, you could hear it roar. I noticed no difference in noise, and I noticed no difference in performance. I didn't want to go with a cold air intake, because it's too much money for me right now. Did I waste my money on this OE replacement, or will the difference be subtle, ie fuel consumption improvement, etc. . ?

I can't say much about the Fram filter except that considering the company's reputation I would be concerned about it's filtering abilities on our diesel engines.

The only way your gonna notice a change in noise level is to replace the stock intake tube or gut the stock tube as its filled with all kinds of stuff to quiet the airflow. I have a stock replacement AFE Proguard 7 filter in the stock airbox along with the AFE Torque Tube and I removed the silencer ring. The noise level of the turbo is slightly higher but not much. Several people have ridden in my truck before and after the change and no one has noticed it. I do notice it though. I did not want it to scream as I tow alot with the truck and don't wanna listen to a screaming turbo for hundreds of miles. If you want it to scream, your gonna have to loose the stock box and intake tube. I have never seen anyone report increases in performance from changing just the intake. Gotta add fuel to the air to get performance. I did not see any change in my EGT's either. By the way the only thing I'd run for a filter other than stock is the AFE 7.

I stopped by the dealership where I bought my truck to shoot the breeze with my salesman and mentioned the Fram Air Hog to him. He told me that if I have one, I need to take it out now and replace it with a regular filter; apparently some guy had just come in with a busted CTD and a K&N cold air filter. It would seem that the CTD had been "dry washed (Service guy's words)" by the K&N, and DC decided to void his warranty. I bought a stock filter from the parts dept, put it in the Ram and returned the Air Hog to Advance Auto Parts. Better safe than sorry, I guess.

There's been considerable conversation on the TDR concerning Fram and other replacement media. Fram is not an OE replacement. Fram filters do not meet or exceed the manufacturers recommendations. Try Baldwin, Fleetguard, Purolator and a few others. These manufacturers products meet or exceed the original equipment. Some of these manufacturers also share product lines but swap a different sticker on the product.

if you read your manual it will tell you that oiled filters will void your warranty, also consider frams reputation  do it right get a new amsoil filter. have fun :-laf

Spoken like a true dealer, LOL. I looked in my manual, but couldn't find what you were referring to. What page is that on?

couldent have said it better myself. dealers will look for anything to "sell" I highly doubt that there was anything to do with the air filter. a lot of trucks that this have happened to or at least in my shop had driven around with a hole in the intake tube for 150k miles. I have used everykind of filter and I am sticking with k&n for everything. the "best" foam filter that I was using on my car was a joke, intake was like a beach, all ov my intakes with k&n's are dry as a bone and clean. thats all I need. that and seeing millions of reliable miles on them.

oh and I just made an adapter and used a large cone filter on the stock tube, later I will be making my own aluminum intake tube and putting the filter where I want it. oooh, its so nice with a nice new tig

I had a K&N RE-0880 cone filter on my '01 once, but it did such a poor job of filtering I ripped it out of there after 3000 miles. My intake tube was coated with a fine layer of dust. It was preoiled and had a foam prefilter on it, but with all that it still couldn't stop dirt.

I wouldn't be any more willing to try a Fram, given their oil filters for the Cummins are by far the lowest quality of any you can buy.

Lynes, I put an air hog in my truck. Compared to the K&N they both appear to be contructed from the same material. Kind of looks like a wire screen with a screen door screen then cotton in the middle. And it's oiled. I noticed a performance difference right off the bat. Also, for those of you not wanting to use a high flow filter, consider the article in the last edition of TDR magazine on the intake box modification to eliminate the "sucking air through a straw" effect and get your performance back with the stock filter.
