For any of you that are running or are interested in Fram Fuel Filters***

Updated canister and element part numbers. See the link below.

As you can see the filters are purchased from Cummins and repackaged by Fram so in the case of fuel filters you might save a buck or two using the Fram with no fear of quality issues. :D:D

Thought it worth a mention at least.

Mike

I would not touch a Fram with a 39. 5 foot pole.

I have heard horror stories from this site about them and 2 weeks ago a friend puts one in his car. 5 miles down the road it sounds like he has rocks in his block. We pull the filter off and it ha come apart and the filter element was laying sideways in the canister. A new filter has helped with the noise but it sounds like his bottom end is toast.

I understand your feelings regarding the Fram. I will run only Fleetguard on my truck for the oil filter.

However in this case it is a Fleetguard Filter that is repackaged so it IS the same filter in the box. That happens more than you think. Hastings, Baldwin etc. also do the same thing. For this particular filter you are safe buying those two part numbers if you want to save a few bucks. Not defending them, just presenting an option.

As far as your buddy's vehicle, contact Fram.

They have a division that takes care of standing behind their product. If it is defective and the motor was in good condition before the episode contact them and see if they will pony up. I have seen them do it before.

But he needs to keep the bum filter so that they can evaluate it. If he threw it away then no dice.

I will provide you with the phone number for that division and it may be worth a call as long as he has the bad part.

Let me know.

I will say that we have sold Fram products here for 14 years which didn't excite me at first, but in that period of time we have only had to call that product helpline once. They took all the info from me and then made contact with the customer. They took it from there and made it right so I have to give them credit in that instance.

We also stock and sell Fleetguard, Cat, Detroit and Donaldson brand filters but have to keep the Fram in stock for the customer that want's the lowest priced filters possible. I don't push Fram myself, prefer they buy the OEM filter but if they insist then THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT... ...

I would inspect every filter to ensure it is a cummins OE filter because eventually they will manufacture their own inferior filter to increase the bottom line.

I have seen this with Ford Power Stroke filters. initialy they rebox the OEM filters then they manufacture their own.

That can happen, no argument there.

I think though that in this particular application (6. 7 Fuel Filter) there simply won't be demand enough for Fram to consider production. Too special and slow moving. I am making the assumption that this is kind of Dodge specific as I have not seen it on Fed-Ex or UPS chassis with 6. 7 engines so far. But worth watching, for sure.

I will do a price comparison when it gets on my price tape. Right now I can't, have to wait until May. When I am able to I will post a comparison between the Fleetguard and the Fram. May turn out to be very little difference, who knows.

Mike.

The thing that scares me about the re-badging of filters is not knowing when the rebadge is rebadged from another manufacturer. I have heard the horror stories about the Fram oil filter in the Cummins, and that Fram has stood behind the replacement of the engine... Provided MWilson's guidelines are followed. I guess, I'm just following along with what TBartlett said. I've been secure with Fleetguard, and will stay with them. Not sexy, but does the job.

In a pinch... ..... there would be more outlets to purchase a FRAM fuel filter.

That's true but why not just carry a spare Fleetguard filter in the truck? I have always carried one but have never had to use one. As Murphy's Law might suggest, I've never needed a filter in an emergency because I had one.
