Nothing earth shattering to report, finally got around to the Frantz filter install. All went well, after a borrowed a ez out for the brass fitting a snapped off in the port on top of the oil filter :rolleyes: . I added a 0-30 psi gauge, hopefully it will be an indicator when the filter needs changing, if not, it was a good excuse to use the gauge that I had lying around for the last year. At start up, when cold, the gauge on the Frantz reads about 15 psi's at idle, goes up to about 20 psi's when I up the RPM's to 2500 ( I have it angled so that I can see the gauge from inside the cab with the hood up). After the oil is warm, at idle psi's are around 5-6. Here's a few pics.....

Don't mind the dust, next up is a good engine compartment bath for Baby Huey.

don't intend to insult you, but if you are seeing such low oil pressure, you sure better get that filter out of there! Your pressure should be close to 80 psi cold and 40psi hot. By the way, engine failure which can be traced to an unauthorized oil filter is not warranteed, at all.

That PSI may not be a concern depending on where the gauge is.

That's a bypass, they get a very restricted feed, if it is down stream of the restricted fitting for the bypass, or post bypass filter, AND the engine's still showing PSI on the gauge, I wouldn't be too concerned.

The pressure should be low, the oil isn't being squeezed though galleys and nozzles, it's just dumping into the sump. If so much oil was flowing though the bypass to lower your main oil pressure then you should be concerned. When the bypass finally plugs up totally the pressure will read the same as your main oil pressure.
 
Nice neat installation Scott. I like the alternator bracket.

When I pulled off the return line (have the truck warm) I got about 40 Oz of flow per minute. I was told this is a good number.

Just some more info. The Amsoil By-pass is designed to flow approximately 6 qts of oil/5 minutes @ 40 PSI pressure. ( there is a restricter in the return side. ) I have never tested the pressure after the by-pass, but my oil pressure on the gauge in the cab never goes below 40 PSI even at idle.

Okay, first off, my oil pressure is fine. The gauge I installed reads ( at least that was my intention), the flow of oil after the filter, not before. I re-thought my install, as I noticed that I have a good flow with 0 psi's the way it is now when the oil is truely warmed up. The reason for 0 psi's is that there is no restriction from the filter to the cap. I'll have to move the gauge so that it reads the psi's inbound ( guess I need a 0-100 psi gauge now) and look for a restriction in the way of higher psi's for signs of a clogged filter. Clear as mud, right. I'll put the gauge on and take another pic. using my re-thought method.

Hi Guys!:) This is Deborah. Scotts pictures look great! In regards to Ol Ron's concern about the warranty and PSI, as long as you do not modify or remove any original equipment your warrenty will be fine. One of the other posts pointed out that the Frantz Filter is a by-pass unit. That is correct! Technically only about 10% of the oil in your system is being diverted into the Frantz Filter for cleaning. As you continue to drive, your oil will improve in cleanliness. If you were to "forget" to change you TP Roll, or it was to get pluged, the first indicator would be a cold cannister due to no oil flow through the Frantz. Your conventional Spin On Factory Oil Filter is still doing the job of filtering your oil, just not as well as the Frantz can clean it. It takes time to get your oil clean if you start out with dirty oil, as I did when I put my Frantz Oil Filter on my '96 Ford Windstar. (sorry about it not being a Dodge) After about 3000 miles, there will be a significant improvement in the cleanliness of my oil, hence I did not have to throw it away. Remember, oil does not wear out, it just gets dirty! Put on a Frantz and you will clean your oil continuously instead of dumping it. Scott's install looks great, but he did also add a few extra "Bells and Whistles" to accomplish what he personally wants for his "Big Huey. " Have a Great Day!:D :cool:

Dirty Engine?

Dear Scott:

If you think your engine is dirty, than mine must need to just be replaced!:p :D I just finally got the transmission gasket replaced that was causing a nice ugly leak on my Windstar. My mechanic friend that helped me put my Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter on, changed the transmission fluid too and within the next week we will be putting my Frantz Transmission Filter on next!:cool:

I will mount it next to my Frantz Oil Filter, so I can take a nice picture to show them both off. Yeah!Oo.
 
LOL David, I know, I know. I just can't seem to summon the strength to spray water on all those electronics, scares the heck outta me. The Dr. told me that, after 6-10 more visits, I'll be cured and will be washing my engine compartment with wild abandon. I'm still skeptical at best :D .



Note to self... remove DDressler from my Xmas card list :p ;)



edit... Does anyone know the limits of those liquid filled gauges ? I know I'm pegging mine when it's first started. Now that I moved the gauge, I see about 58 psi's pre-Frantz filter ( gauge is a 0-60) at idle. After a 15 mile ride the gauge reads about 15 psi's at idle. Unless someone knows different, I'm going to replace the 0-60 with a 0-100 psi liquid filled gauge. They are only about $20. 00 through Summit Racing, would hate to have a catastrophic failure and start shooting oil everywhere. Any thoughts ?????

Scott, it's easy to see when a gauge is damaged from getting pegged, it won't return to zero. Grainger has tons of choices in liquid filled stainless gauges, most under $10.
