Subject: Motor not running due to ground brush sticking
We have been receiving complaints about the motor on some of our system’s not running. This is after diagnosing that there is power and a good ground supplying the motor. Some of these customers have lightly tapped on the motor, while the power was on, and the motor started running. This has been only happening to our knowledge on the 24 Valve Dodge Cummins.
We believe this is due to a poor ground thru the ECM, we have discovered (with the help of one of our dealers) that on some of the Dodge ECM’s there is a high resistance on the ground side of the factory fuel pump wire harness. This is what we believe is causing the ground brush to stick. To help with this problem we have incorporated another ground wire into our wire harness for the 24 Valve Dodge’s. This ground wire is connected to the negative terminal on the battery.
Our Suggestions:
Make sure you have proper/clean ground. If you have a 24 Valve Dodge Cummins and the wire harness you have only plugs into the ECM for the power/ground source we suggest you solder in another ground wire and connect it to the negative post on the battery. The green wire in our harness is the ground wire; this would be a good place to attach another ground wire. While you’re performing this suggestion, remove the fuse several times, this will clean the contacts of the fuse holder, and before installing a new fuse (15amps) apply some di-electric grease to the fuse holder. This can prevent problems down the road.
Our Solutions:
For everyone that has sent in their product registration form along with a copy of their purchase receipt (you have to send those two items in to qualify for the warranty) we will be sending out a new ground brush and two new brush caps. Please replace the old brush caps with the new ones. The new ones have o’rings to make sure they will not back out and they will seal better. Instructions will accompany the hardware. This is for FASS fuel systems serial numbers 2024 – 3246 and serial numbers 100 – 203 for the FASS HPFP’s
