Tst ?

So what is an OK frequency for changing the FASS filter?

I have around 25k on the current HF6604 (3 micron)... still holding good pressure, doesn't cause the low pressure light to come on... But I have drained quite a bit of junk out of the separator (meaning if it is in big chunks, it is in small chunks too!)

How many miles is everyone else putting on these before they change them out??

I think the manual suggested 30,000. I changed mine around 22,000 and used the Fleetguard HF6604 3 micron filter also. I plan on changing every 25k or before if fuel pressure drops or starts to vary much from normal.

One thing I am trying to understand about my FASS system...

Is there ANY need for ANY sort of pre-filter before the fuel supply enters the FASS system? Meaning, IF I remove the OE fuel module screens and use a -08 A/N pickup with no sort of pre-filter, does the FASS adequately filter out all the junk in either the fuel filter or separator before going through the air separation portion of the system?

Or, is it best to use a pre-filtering system of some sort?

The fuel is pulled through the fuel/water separator before the pump... that is a 144 micron screen. So the water separator should catch anything that you pull from the tank. This is the FASS, and not the FASS II Pump only...

I guess I'll wait until 30k... I haven't seen any sort of pressure drop.

Thanks for the info Steve.

I did some serious looking and found a great spot to mount my System 1 fuel filter (30 micron, s/s screen mesh filter media). This will be my pre-filter for my FASS system.

And yes, I have the FASS ( :D ) not just the pump ( ).

I wouldn't even bother... I am running the FASS alone and the water separator pulls a bunch of crap out... doesn't seem to be affected by even sand.

But...

I'm not in any way using the OE fuel module filtering media (e. g. , screens), to filter the supply side of my new system. In fact, the only thing I'm using the OE fuel module for is a mounting location for the fuel level sending unit. That, and a mounting system for my new supply and return hardware.

In other words, the OE module is sort of a 'host'...

like on Aliens. :D

I'm not using any sort of prefilter between my 1/2" stand pipe and the FASS. I was told I did not have to by the dealer and I was also told the fuel went through both filters before it enters the pump.

Shouldn't matter... anything large enough to get sucked into the line will get caught in the pre-screen/water separator... the FASS is set-up: Tank - water separator/screen - pump - main filter - engine. Anything you pull out of the tank will get caught in the screen prior to ever seeing the pump... a 144 micron screen is still pretty small.

(Debris from cut lines and such... . always flush the lines before install!).

As I've been making my own Aeroquip AQP and TRH braided stainless steel hoses for every hot rod project I've worked on for well over 30 years now, I'm well versed in all the tricks of the trade. It does take time to perform all the necessary steps to fabricate quality hoses but doing it right the first time is the ONLY way to go (IMO).

And yes, EVERY hose surrounding my FASS system (or anything else on my Ram for that matter), has either Aeroquip AQP or TRH hose/fittings.

Including my boost and fuel pressure gauges (Aeroquip TRH w. s/s fittings! :--) ).

I would highly recommend not running a 2 micron filter on the water sep side. This is the suction side of the pump and we have had a few issues with people cavatating due to the restriction that this filter adds. Hence the 140 Micron water sep we use.

What you recommend and what people actually do are sometimes two different things... :-laf

Dan,

My FASS pump is extremely noisy, if you stand near the tailgate of the truck it sounds as if it is going to come up through the bed! I have never changed the filter or drained the water seperator, I have about 20K miles on the FASS system and my FP stays right at 15 PSI. I am very pleased with the great FP and if I have to live with the noise it is no big deal. Any ideas on what could be causing all the noise?

TIA

First, not draining your water separator is just stupid... I suppose you would blame the FASS if you sucked a bunch of water into the IP?

I found part of my noise was due to the restriction of fuel coming from the tank... I tweaked the FASS's supplied connector (drilled it out to max) and it quieted down...

I have also put over 30k on my FASS (really didn't know this until I looked the other day)... it is a lot quieter now than when I first put it on... must need a "wear-in" time...

I didn't say that I was blaming anything on the FASS, all I was looking for was some direction on what might be causing the noise, which I got from Dan.

You response was a lot of help though
