I can verify that what steved says about the brake shoes is true. The side gears have little brake shoes in the bottom of their bores. Don't think of it like a clutch pack in the older Dana 80 units.

This is effectively a Torsen-type differential, so you still need something to absorb the load from the helix angle on the side gears.
